Profile Avatar Picture instead of Featured Image? Why?

    I recently added a picture to my wordpress profile ‘avatar’, but when I made a blog post, my picture went out to shared sites (LinkedIn, FB and Twitter) instead of my ‘featured image’ for the blog posting. Why? (and how do I change it back to the way it was?)
