profile photo upload problems
-
I accidentally uploaded a photo that does not fit in the allowed box. It cuts off my head. But now I cannot upload another photo to replace it. I logged out and logged back in and it still is not uploading a new photo. It just keeps telling me to retry again. Help.

I don’t see any WordPress.com sites under your account here.
What is the URL of the site with the problem?

I dont understand the question. I am having a problem with my account here at wordpress.com, specifically my profile picture. (See above)
Some background: Since yahoo groups is ending, a group I belong to has started an email group through something called “Empathy”, which seems to be connected to wordpress. They sent me to wordpress to set up my profile and photo. I already had a previous account with wordpress for a blog I have. I tried signing in with that username and password but for some reason it was not recognizing me, even though I was currently signed in to my blog account. So then I just started a new account with a new email address. That worked and I started to set up the wordpress account. I was able to upload a photo, but it wasnt the one that I wanted, so I tried again and it will not work no matter how many times I try. I dont even know how to delete the old photo now. Does any of this make sense? -
Actually, it looks like a site called Affinity said I needed to edit my profile picture on Gravatar.com, which I needed a wordpress account to sign up for. I am definitely confused at this point.

Okay, Gravatar is an online identity service, where you can create online profiles for yourself using different email addresses. Many services integrate with Gravatar, so you create a Gravatar identity with a particular email, and if you then sign up with that email at a particular service, they automatically fetch your Gravatar picture associated with that email address, for use on that service.
It sounds like the group/site you’re signing up with, is one of the services which uses Gravatar.
Gravatar is linked to WordPress.com – if you create a Gravatar for the first time, that also creates a WordPress.com username account, and if you register a WordPress.com username account, it creates a Gravatar profile for you. You can add additional emails, each with their own picture, to your Gravatar profile to create multiple identities, but the primary email is the one that’s also associated with your WordPress.com account.
This account is something completely separate and different from the admin account you have on any WordPress websites you host somewhere else. That’s why our system didn’t recognise you when you tried to sign in with another username – that username is specific to your site’s admin account, and has no connection to WordPress.com.
Now for the image:
Gravatar images can only be square. That’s why your image is being cut off. When you first uploaded the image you would have had an option to crop the image, but I’m guessing you skipped that, not realising what would happen.
Did you try updating your picture here?
If that’s where you get the error, try clearing your browser cache, or see if it makes a difference if you log in using incognito mode.
Alternatively you can also do this on Gravatar directly. Go to https://en.gravatar.com/emails/ and click Add New Image at the bottom. Once you’ve uploaded a new image, you can set that as the image for your profile instead.
Make sure to use an image that’s square, and at least 500×500 pixels big.

Thank you for all of this!
Yeah, when I posted the original photo it did not give me the option to crop the whole photo. I could only crop the bottom half for some reason.
I just tried updating it again on wordpress.com/me and it still would not work. Then I tried going to the gravatar link and tried to upload a photo there and it took me to the cropping page but the image never showed up there. So weird. So then I gave up and decided to try and do it through the gravatar link on my phone and that finally worked!
Thanks again for all your help. So appreciated.
