I’m trying to update my profile picture, but going through this stupid gravatar thing is not letting me do it. Why do we have to go through that now?

WordPress.com and gravatar.com accounts are one in the same and have always been one in the same. http://blog.gravatar.com/2013/04/03/gravatar-and-wordpress-com-together-forever/

Know that there is only a single gravatar image and a single email address for every username account, and that a wordpress.com account and a gravatar account are one in the same thing. Gravatar support docs are at http://en.gravatar.com/support/ See this one http://en.gravatar.com/support/existing-account/
Gravatar/blavatar (favicon) images do not show up instantly after uploading them. Gravatar images are cached and frequently take several days to display after a change.
