profit vs. costs of self-hosting
-
I’m new to blogging, and this is my first post, so I apologize in advance if it’s in the wrong section.
I own the domain I plan to use, and will buy domain mapping before the blog goes public. My plan is to use domain mapping until I have enough traffic that the expense of self-hosting will be covered by ad revenues. I’m under the impression that this can be done relatively painlessly. I realize that could be months or years in the future, or never, and see no point paying for self-hosting in the meantime. (If anything I’ve said is wrong, PLEASE tell me about it before I buy domain mapping!)
My question is this: approximately how much traffic is necessary before the expenses of self-hosting will be covered by using AdSense after the move? I’m optimistically assuming it’s less than WordPress’s requirement of 25,000 views per month to qualify for AdControl, but I’d like to be sure.
Thanks to everyone who replies!

Starting out here to get your branding and traffic established with a new domain name is a good move. As far as how much money and how many views you will need to pay for a self-hosted site and perhaps make a little extra money depends on a number of factor. One is your audience. Some types of content seems to draw people that are more willing to click on ads than others, and I have no data to back that up, other than my observations with some of my past clients. Some with very high numbers of views were earning less than those will lower numbers.
Bottom line: Don’t quit your day job.

Thanks for the reply! :)
I have no delusions about becoming an internet millionaire – the only reason I’m starting a blog is because I spent so much time writing about the subject anyway, I figured I might as well. If I can get a bit of extra money from it, that’s great, but if not, it’s not a big deal. If I wanted to use it as a get-rich-quick scheme, I would have gone with Blogger! ;)

Heh, yeah blogger seems to have a lot of those.
Do any of them work?

I belong to other forums and I see Blogger (blogspot) bloggers complaining about the niggardly income they make from Goggle adsense.
