how do i promote my blog within wordpress and outside of wordpress e.g. google?
Also, what is pinging?
I have tried searching but cannot find an answer (perhaps I didn’t recognise the answer!!)

There are lots of ways to promote your blog (or any other site) and if you’ve promoted any other site before you would do it the same way with your blog.
Social bookmarking is a great way to start promoting; bookmark everywhere – you can use a really cool free social bookmarking tool at http://www.socialmarker.com (it bookmarks to 40+ sites in a much shorter time than if you went to each site manually (you do have to set up accts w/all of the sites the first go round).
Submitting your blog to blog directories like zimbio.com, blogcatalog.com etc. is another thing you want to do. (I’m not sure which ones are the best but you can do a Google search- zimbio is a good one though).
Link building – lots of methods for this but one is to read other people’s blogs in the same niche as yours and comment on them (no spam! relative helpful comments only). Put your keyword phrase in the “name” field of your blog comments because the name section is what gets linked – so you’re essentially anchor texting here. You don’t need to include links in your blog post; you’ve already linked with your keywords in the name and you might appear as spam if you do.
Comment on forums that are relative to your blog (again with valuable info).
Make sure you use anchor; not just plain text keywords whenever possible.
Make sure you optimize your site for your keywords and even do a little keyword research to help you choose the right (most searched for keywords) that relate to your blog. You can use free tools for this too like http://www.freekeywords.wordtracker.com. I also sometimes use the Google adwords tool for this in conjunction with that one; it’s at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.
If you have wordpress.org (where you’re hosting your blog) instead of wordpress.com (where they host your blog) you can upload what seems to look like a cool seo wordpress plugin (just dl’ed it so I can’t speak on it much yet) called All-In-One SEO pack which will optimize your blog for search engines. Soooo those are a few ways to start promoting your blog.
You can download a free social media report on this (step-by-step blueprint on promoting, bookmarking, where to do it, etc.) at socialmediadaily.com. That report is written by a top marketer who’s a great person to learn from.
She also has a 30minutebacklinks.com program that’s $97 that’s a program on link building. It’s really great tool.
(umm I never really read forum rules, I’m too lazy I guess…so I hope it was okay to post the links I did? They’re all helpful links, none of them are links to any of my stuff nor affiliate links so -basically no promotion there- I’m assuming that’s okay and I don’t get in trouble?)

Lawd, I just gave a class huh. Another thing I forgot to mention is that wordpress automatically sends pings to pingomatic (that your blog has updated) and places you in the wordpress blogs arena and allows you to be found through search engines (you might have to give that permission but I don’t remember offhand).

Much of the informaton imconnections posted is not applicable at all to wordpress.com blogs. At least one of them is against the ToS and will lead to a blog being deleted by staff.
@imconnections – I know you’re trying to help, but offering advice nobody with a wordpress.com blog can use is not helpful.

Quite frankly, I’m too lazy to read stickys on all the forums. Might sound ludacris but I’m just being honest. I did, however, follow the link you posted and it doesn’t lead to anything that says how you “can’t” promote a wordpress.com blog or the ways you are “allowed to” promote your blog. Seems pretty stupid to place restrictions on promotions as long as they aren’t spamming.
The blog promotion and site promotions tips I gave apply to any site or blog. Not sure which ones are breaking .com rules but you might be more specific in your efforts to be more helpful because I still have no idea which ones that might be (and anyone else not knowing or the original poster obviously won’t have a clue either) =) So if you mean some are breaking the rules; maybe so – didn’t know there were any; but those promotion steps work, I know that much.
I .org though so I can promote however I please seeing as how I host my own blog and own the domain.

Okay, I give…spent the last few minutes searching for what wordpress.com considers illegal when it comes to blog promotion…came up with nada.
