Proofreading Suggestions Not Showing Up On The First Try Most Of The Time

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I would like to report a problem with Proofreading/After The Deadline/Proofread Writing Button where when I click the Proofread Writing Button in the Dashboard Editor’s Visual Editor words with spelling/grammar suggestions are highlighted/underlined like they are supposed to be, but most of the time (not every time, but most of the time) the suggestions will not show up when I click on the highlighted/underlined words; and so I have to click the Proofread Writing Button again to remove it and then click it again to add it back, and then suggestions usually work but I have to do this almost every time now when I go to edit a new or old post on the first try (it usually takes a second try for the suggestions to work, and after this it works).

Is this a bug or am I imagining things or is the problem on my side? :D

I have been having this problem for over a week, at first I thought that maybe my mouse button was sticking sometimes and/or that there were temporary server problems on WordPress.com’s side, but this keeps happening most of the time; and it almost always works after I follow those steps that I mentioned above.

I have tested this on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Windows 7 on Firefox 31 on a desktop computer with all Proofreading settings selected/enabled for English.

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

    Hi John Jr!

That sounds really frustrating. I haven’t seen any other reports of this issue, but could you tell me which editor you’re using? The new one or the classic one? And do you have any extensions enabled in your browsers?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello Shawna :) ,

I am using The Classic Editor. (The New Editor does not have the Grammar/Spell Check Button when I last checked, which was a while back because I do not use the New Editor ;) )

I am also having this problem in the newest Firefox 32 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with the browser extensions: Adblock Plus (Easy List, Easy Privacy List, Malware Domains List, Adblock Warning Removal List), WOT (Web Of Trust), Xmarks, Video Download Helper, and Avast Online Security.

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

    Hello Shawna,

I just tried running Firefox in Safe Mode and it worked on the first time, and then I tried Firefox in Normal Mode and it worked on the first time; but it usually does start working again after the first time (after following the steps above that I named, the problem is temporarily fixed, but then it happens again later or the next day), and so the problem will possibly be there again when I try it tomorrow or later today after exiting my browser again but I will try to remember to test it again then. ;)

I will try to remember to try it in Safe Mode tomorrow and/or later today, and see what happens. ;)

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

Woops! You’re right about that. :)

Thanks for the further testing. If it works in safe mode, the issue is likely being caused by one of your extensions. Most extensions don’t run in safe mode, or need to be manually enabled to do so.

Can you try disabling all of your extensions and adding them back one by one, testing in between?

  • Unknown's avatar

You are welcome, since the problem usually is temporarily fixed by clicking the button again to remove them and then clicking it again to add them back (it is currently working in normal mode with extensions and in safe mode without extensions), I will wait until later or tomorrow so that the problem can start again; and then try Safe Mode again, if it happens again, I will then try one extension at-a-time. :)

I will try to remember to let you know what happens then or tomorrow.

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

    Hello Shawna,

I tried this on another computer with the same extensions and it happened again, and so I tried running Firefox in Safe Mode; and it did not happen, and so I suspect that it is probably sometimes caused by the Avast Online Security extension (which is the newest extension that I have been using, and it is still in testing).

So I will mark this this topic as resolved for now, I will remove this extension, and see what happens over the weekend; and if it happens again, I will try removing another extension, thank you. ;)

Great. I’m glad we got that sorted out. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Have a great weekend, John Jr! :)

Thank you very much Shawna, and a happy weekend to you too. :)

    Hello Shawna,

I guess I was wrong about the Avast Online Security extension for Firefox, since I removed it I have had this problem happen to me three times, and so now I will disable the Easy Privacy List for the Adblock Plus extension for Firefox; and I will see if it is the problem or not, and I will let you know what happens. ;)

Oh no! Definitely let me know what you find. :)

    Hello Shawna,

I have been surprised once again, after removing the Easy Privacy List from the Adblock Plus extension for Firefox, this problem has happened once again (only once so far) since I removed it; and so I am a bit confused now because the only other new extension and list that I have been using recently is the Xmarks extension for Firefox that I use to backup my bookmarks so I guess I will disable it next and see what happens.

    This is getting interesting/strange. :D

There are three other lists that I am still using for Adblock Plus (Easy List (which I always have used), Malware Domains List (which I have used for a few years), and the Adblock Warning Removal List (which I started using this year)), but disabling them and/or the entire extension would make browsing the internet less bearable because I am so used to it blocking advertisements (I have used this extension for years); but I might try it if the Xmarks test fails. ;)

    Hello Shawna,

I disabled the Xmarks extension for Firefox, but the problem happened again this time on my new Windows 8.1 partition in Firefox 32; and so next I will probably try disabling the WOT (Web Of Trust) extension for Firefox.

    Hello Shawna,

I disabled the Web Of Trust (WOT) extension for Firefox 32.1 on Windows 8.1 64-Bit, and the problem happened again; and so now I will probably try disabling the Video DownloadHelper extension, and then the entire Adblock Plus extension if that does not work. ;)

    -John Jr

    Hello Shawna,

I disabled the Video DownloadHelper extension but the problem still happened, and then I disabled the entire Adblock Plus extension but the problem still happened; and so the last extension left for me to test is the Zemanta extension, when I disabled it the problem stopped, and when I enabled it again the problem still was not there so I need more time to test it to see if the Zemanta extension is the really the cause or not.

This is just a quiet little heads up being posted only because you may have missed it. Full Staff Support will return September 24

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello Timethief,

I did not know that, they probably should have posted that on WordPress News as well so that more people would know because I usually do not notice or pay attention to the sticky topics because they are not very noticeable to me (they probably should make them more noticeable and set up an email alert for all new sticky topics that we can subscribe too), thank you for sharing that. :)

I know that the staff usually is not around much during the weekend as well and so I was not expecting any response during this time, I was just posting each thing that I have tested so far, so that it would be documented so that anyone who is interested can see it. ;)

This is a strange little problem that seems to come and go during different parts of the day every day, and so it will probably take a while to figure it out.

    Thank you,
    -John Jr

  • johnjronline,

Have you experienced (or tested) this issue with a different browser?
