Protected Blog Error When it's Public?

  • Unknown's avatar

So my website was private, but just made it live and launched it so it could be found in search engines and people can view the website besides me inviting them to view the website. When posting on Facebook and G+ I keep getting an error that says: “Protected Blog > Log In, your website is marked private by its owner. If you were invited to view this site, please log in below.” But again, it is not private anymore. I understand I can edit that information on Facebook and G+ but it would be nice to have the actual website information populate. Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It might take a while for search engines and crawlers to “catch-up” with the new status of your blog. In the meantime, if you share the direct link to your first post (http://dcdphie.com/2014/07/01/welcome/) rather than the link to your full blog, it will work (at least on FaceBook which is where I tested it).

Thanks! Sort of an unrelated question, when I Google search DC Dphie this error message comes up: A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt- any idea what that means?

    It’s actually a totally related question :)

The rule of thumb is it can take up to 72 hours for site changes like the one you made to propagate through the internet. The error message to which you refer is another way of saying “I can’t find that site because I think it’s set to private.”

A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.

What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is.

By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.

However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. To do that create two pages first http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

Creating a static front page tends to squelch traffic flow to your site. You need to publish posts not pages frequently. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ It takes weeks for search engines to index content in a new blog and/or to re-index content under a new URL. What attracts search engines is unique content in posts that cannot be found anywhere else on the internet. I suggest you start now publishing original content posts frequently two or even three times weekly. For more information read > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/01/21/omg-i-cant-find-my-blog-on-google/

Important note: The rule of thumb is to assign the least, not the most, combined number of only relevant categories and tags that accurately describe the post content. To verify blog ownership of a WordPress.com blog with the major search engines you must use this process > http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/
Note: Even if you do not verify the blog the content will be indexed by search engines so don’t feel panicky about this please.

Note also that WordPress.com automatically supplies sitemaps for our blogs to search engines – we do nothing. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sitemaps/#xml-sitemaps-for-search-engines

I’d also like to suggest that you may want to set up subscriptions. You can set up email subscriptions here > Appearance > Widgets > Follow Blog Widgets by using this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
