Protected Directory outside theme

  Hi. I have a directory outside of my WP theme which has its own htAccess file.
  If I access the directory via any browser (without the theme) a 404 page is shown. If I remove or rename the htAccess file then I can access the directory.
  Obviously if I remove the htAccess file then my directory is at risk, people can access it without a password.
  How should I deal with this?
