Protected posts
-
I’m sorry for bringing this topic again, as the “protected post” subject has already been discussed in 4 or 5 different topics, but I would like to make a suggestion.
According to the related support page, “WordPress will prompt you for the password on your initial visit to a protected post. After entering the password that first time, WordPress will securely store the password with the browser you entered it with so you won’t have to enter it again.”
OK, this is good if you only use your own private computer, but if you read a protected post on a public PC, or on a PC used by several people, then they all will be able to read that post on subsequent visits to the blog.
From a privacy and safety point of view, wouldn’t be better to force the introducing of the password every time someone needs to read a protected post? I thank the idea of saving me the work, but this prevents me of using this facility on my blog, as I really need to grant some privacy to some posts.
Thank you.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you use a public computer, you should clear the cookies after using it. I teach on public computers, and I see this all the time. How many times have I seen somebody’s gmail? Dozens.
-
Thank you for your answer, but I can only grant that “I” clean the cookies if “I” use a public PC, not all the others I need to allow to access that post. Thus the suggestion. If what matters is granting privacy to a post, forcing the introduction of the pw every time would be a better solution, at least not dependant of other’s computer knowledge or goodwill.

hello
I have just ‘passport protected’ 52 of my posts
52 of them have ‘protected’ written in the subject + title
51 of them you can read what is in the post and so freely have access without being asked for my passwordOnly One has the following :” There is no excerpt because this is a protected post.”
So Only1 seems to be really ‘protected’ !
What is going on?
I also logged out to access my blog as an outsider to check if anyone -using my computer-could read those posts without being asked for the password and sadly, nothing changed:( same as the above
Could you help?
thank you -
sorry i should have given you the link- yes it is my blog under ; Categories ” The PROMISE” This is The category I want to password protect
http://vlikev.wordpress.com/category/the-promise/
Thank you for your help

You cannot password protect a category or a category page. You can only password protect individual posts.
-
I didn’t protect a category – how can that be possible ?
I went trough each individual 52 posts that are filed in that category and change the privacy to ‘password protected’ -
Then you’ll be relieved to hear that for each of those posts, people other than you see only
THE PROMISE
Protected: THE PROMISE -CHP 50
There is no excerpt because this is a protected post.

all the others are posts( The Promise) are freely visible t anyone ever using my laptop?how do I stop that ?

Your computer is storing a cookie that tells WP.com who you are. In order for it not to, you have to not only sign out but also delete your cookies and cache.
Don’t let other people use your laptop, or set it to delete cookies and cache after every browser session.

You have to do that manually. And if you have more than one browser open, and have signed in to WordPress, then you must do that for each one—for example, I often use both Safari and Firefox.
You could password protect your computer so that it when it goes to sleep you’d need to enter your password to use it. But the cookies would still be there unless you cleared cache and cookies.

1tess, I’m glad someone came again to this discussion. I still think that it would be much better if you do not use cookies to store the passwords, if the idea is to protect posts from being read by unauthorized readers. I understand this is not a hard/strong security, but at least would prevent people using public or shared computer of reading pw protected post without any difficulty. The idea expressed by “so you won’t have to enter it again” is nice, but really doesn’t help much and does more harm than benefit. When we pw protect a post, we would like that it is read only by those knowing the pw, and everybody understands that we can not grant that they are able or willing to delete the cookies when they use such a computer.

yes I agree- now I am stressed at the idea of someone using my laptop and ending up reading my blog especially the posts that are meant to be protected-
I am spending lots of time on it so they could end up on the page very easily with all the so called protected post free for all to read…
Because of that I created a whole new blog and made it private, but to my great disappointment it is still the same issue…;o)Something should really be done about it ;O(
Thanks 1tess & chtransmissoes
