Protecting posts

When I set my posts to Protected, it only seems to hide the comments, but shows the additional fields that i created in that post. I would like to password protect my posts so people can only see them listed on a page but not be allowed to open them to see the full post without a password. help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Can you share an example of this? I’m unable to see it, and want to be sure I understand. :)

can i upload a screen shot? if not, then…
i have a page with a number of project listed in post format. i see the title of post, featured pic, a button that says ‘read more’.
i want to be able to password protect the post so that a viewer can see only that and not be able to click on the ‘see more’ to proceed to open up the post and see more info about that post.
when i applied ‘password protect’ to a post, & go to see what happens, the site allows me to open the post to the next screen, which shows me more details on that post[custom fields that i inserted], but tells me that it is password protected so i cant see [but i can see everything that is there.
i wish i could sent you a screen shot or a link. can i do that?

btw i would ideally like to password protect all my 250 posts, so that people can see the heading and feature picture but not anything else

  • Hi there,

As the admin of the site you will still be able to see all posts, even if they are password protected. Post passwords are also stored in your browser via a cookie so that, once you’ve entered the password, you won’t need to enter it again next time.

To test how password protected posts look to visitors to your site, open your site in incognito mode in Chrome, or otherwise log out of your account and clear your browser cache and cookies. Then you should see the password prompt when you try to view any protected post.

The only way to hide posts on a public WordPress.com site is to password-protect each post individually. If you don’t want anyone to be able to read the posts on your site, consider setting the site itself to private instead. That way only people you invite will be able to view it.

If you have more questions about this, please let me know, and also let me know the URL of the site, and the page you’re describing where you are listing the posts, as I don’t see anything like that on the site you indicated above.
