Public access to media files
-
Hi, I’ve noticed people are finding/clicking on images that I’ve uploaded but not published in posts. I want to keep them in my media library for future use but I don’t want them to be public. How is this happening, and how can I stop it, please?

Hi there,
Can you please let me know your site’s address so I can point you in the right direction of getting support?

Hi, thanks for responding. I think I’m on .org so thanks for the link. But just in case, my site is https://liza-frank.com
All best

Hi Liza,
Your site is indeed not hosted elswhere so we may not be able to help here but, I noticed that you are using Jetpack. I was wondering what did you mean that people can access unpublished files. Is it because you see them as visited in your WordPress.com stats?

Hi Fresatomica, apologies for not replying before now. Yes, I’m seeing that people have clicked unpublished photographs (they’re in my library but not used on any posts or pages) on the jetpack stats page, which has tallied with the WP.com stats until Home Page/Archives. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Liza

When an image is uploaded in WordPress, an attachment page is created. When that happens, it’s added to Jetpack’s image sitemap under https://liza-frank.com/image-sitemap-index-1.xml
So, these images are being indexed by search engines, which is most likely where they’re being found.
Jetpack’s sitemap system was indented to work for most needs without any customization, but in your case, you might want to use a sitemap with more customization available, like https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/
