Public information on the profile
-
Hi!
Is there a way to prevent the first name and last name to appear anywhere publicly? I thought only the Public Display Name would appear on the profile, but on Gravatar, using the ‘xml’ option, everything is here for anybody to find. That’s a bit annoying, as I’m using a pseudonym, that’s not for displaying my name publicly still… :/I found an option to ‘hide’ the Gravatar profile, but I’m not sure if there is another place where the profile is still displayed on WordPress…
Thanks!

Hi there, I see that this thread has been flagged for Staff attention, but do you mean your full name appears in the various code options (JSON XML PHP VCF QR) on Gravatar? Have you entered anything in your Profile here> https://wordpress.com/me or on Gravatar in the First and Last Name lines? If so, remove it and add your nom de plume instead or nothing.
Staff can advise if this information appears anywhere else when they look in on this thread.

Hi @keotauteur, only the public display name will appear on your site, however, as @justjennifer wrote, if you want to write under a pseudonym, it’s best to use it also as your first and last name.

Thanks for your answers!
So if I enter something into the First and Last Name lines, they will always appear in the various code options on the Gravatar profile, there is no way to prevent these infos from appearing publicly?
I was asking because I’m trying to understand something regarding a French internet law that *might* make mandatory for a blogger to give the service provider (WordPress, here, then) their true identity, but not needing to have it displayed publicly.
And specifically, I’m a writer with a nom de plume, so I definitely not want my real name to appear anywhere publicly (but for WordPress to have it is no problem).

At the Gravatar profile page the JSON, XML, PHP links do provide the following name info: given name, family name, formatted name, and display name. I haven’t tried the VCF link yet because it has to be downloaded. Each of those names are drawn from the Name and Details page (https://en.gravatar.com/profiles/edit#about-you) at Gravatar as follows:
given name — First Name field
family name — Last Name field
formatted name — Full Name field
display name — Display Name fieldYou may enter real names, pseudonyms, gibberish, or (I presume) nothing in each of the fields at the Name and Details page.

Yes, that’s the cause of my “concern” (it’s a big word, I’m not really concerned, just asking if I understand everything all right).
Because a French law about bloggers might (I’m not sure, still trying to check and understand it) make mandatory to give your real first and last name to the service provider hosting the blog. I don’t have any issue with giving that to WordPress. But as I write with a nom de plume, I don’t want my real names to appear publicly.
The thing is, the way the profile section of a WordPress account is set, I felt like only the “Public Display Name” would be, well, public. But it appears that all the other parts of the profile are as well because of this export in other formats on Gravatar. So I’m a little surprised (and disappointed)!

That’s an important concern that I’ll leave to staff to address. However, the given name, family name, formatted name, and display name displayed at the JSON, XML, PHP links of the Gravatar profile page are drawn from info voluntarily provided by you on the Name and Details page. This is not necessarily the same information provided to WordPress.com when you registered the account.
Notice that below the title “Name and Details” it says “Tell people a little bit about who you are.” Anything that you provide in those fields is voluntarily provided to the public. It be entirely fictional, and needn’t include any personal information. You may also leave each of these fields empty.
You may enter real names, pseudonyms, gibberish, or (I presume) nothing in each of the fields at the Name and Details page.
Today I tested leaving all the fields blank. When I did so, the only name field provided at the JSON, XML, PHP links is the “display name,” which is replaced by the username in the absence of an entry in that field.
