Public Pages but Private Blog Entries!

    I’m currently using the blog template entitled Ocean Mist by Ed Merritt for my wordpress journal. Is it possible to make the pages located on the header “public”, and my daily blog entries available only to chosen individuals or completely private, without having to go back and manually label each one “private”? Thanks.

    The only way you can make parts of your blog private is through the use of “passwords” .

    I would recommend that you leave the first blog setting as public and get a second blog and make it a “private” only users I choose blog.

    I hadn’t thought about that. So you’re saying I could just leave my pages visible in the first blog, and post private blog entries in a second? That’s a good idea. Is there anyway to move all of my current blog entries to another blog? Actually it may be easier to do things the other way around, and just move the pages. T

    You can export the contents of your blog out and then import them into another blog but you cannot just picky choosy some of this and that.

    -> Manage -> Export
    When you click the export button WordPress will create an XML file for you to save to your computer. This format, which we call WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR, will contain your posts, comments, custom fields, and categories.

    If you are comfortable working with an WXR file that you get when you export then, you can open it in a plain text editor and delete the parts (posts, comments, categories) that you do not want to import into the second “private” blog. But as you are only talking about moving pages and the comments on them and as you only have 6 pages you may not want to bother.

    You can simply copy and paste the 6 pages into the second blog. Next you can copy and paste the comments on those 6 pages over to the second “private” blog. The comments will be in your username so the next step will be to edit them and insert the correct username, website and email address. Lastly, once everything is “ship shape” in the new “private” blog you can go back to the first blog and delete the original pages and comments belonging to them from it. The only “glitch” is that when you copy and paste the comments over and then edit them to insert the correct information the avatar will not change from yours to that of the original commentator.

    I’d really like to move my blog entries, and keep the six pages in the original blog, because I’ve already shared that website address. However, this all sounds too confusing for me. lol Oh well, I’ll just passcode protect future entries I’d prefer to keep private for now. :) T

    Okay so now you are talking “posts” and not “pages” as before. You can export and import your entire blog contents as I described above. It’s not really confusing at all.

    (1) You can export a duplicate file of the blog contents that you have now out – click one button.
    (2) Then you can import the entire blog contents into the new blog – click one button.
    (3) You will then have two blogs – exact duplicates. All you have to do after that is to delete the Pages from the new blog and you are done.

    A click here and there sounds like something I can handle. lol Ok…I’ll take a look at things now. :) T

    You can do this (1-2-3) as listed above. I know you can. Think positive and give it a try. You have nothing to lose by trying and the end result will be what you wanted. Go for it!

    I appreciate this vote of confidence, and I’m sure I can do it. *smiling* Ok, I’m going to mark both threads resolved now. I hope the rest of your day is relaxing and peaceful TimeThief. :) T

    You don’t have to mark this thread “resolved” yet. Why not give it a whirl and then post and let me know how the export/import went for you? ;-)
