PUBLICIZE AND G : Unchecked posts being published on G

  • Unknown's avatar

Today’s post — bLOGOS/HA HA — was unchecked in the Publicize section of that post when I prepared it and scheduled it. Yet, today, as I was on Google Plus checking other things, there it was in my Posts stream thereon!

I am now back in my blog and have checked the actual post in Edit mode to see what happened. It shows as not being checked to publicize it on G+. So, what happened?

I have studied the WordPress Support documentation on Publicize and quote the following:

You can then uncheck whichever services you don’t want your post to appear on.

I have quite a few scheduled posts also unchecked to publicize. What guarantees do I have that those particular posts will not be publicized on Google Plus?

Why is the system being over-ridden?

    Thanks for any help.

Could you please send the post you are referring to? This way I can take a closer look at it.

    Thank you!

@kardotim: What? Refer to my original question, first sentence.

Update 25feb2014: The latest post, Apples, was publicized on Google+. However, the system had added the shortlink after the post title. This is a new development and did not happen previously. Apart from the fact it is not necessary since there are two links to the post — the post title and the URL directly underneath the title.

I see what you mean. Does this happen often? If not, then it might have been a glitch either on our or Google’s end. Feel free to manually share the post on your Google+ page to see if you encounter the same issue.

    @kardotim: To quote me:

This is a new development and did not happen previously.

    sigh.

I will visit my blog, after I’ve logged off, and Share my own ‘Apples’ post to Google+ to see if the extraneous bits show up. Of course, one of the features of being on Google+ is that I can edit any posts that have been pulled from my WordPress blog, and I did remove those superfluous elements yesterday.

I have also done something extra within my Scheduled posts. If it works, I’ll let you know here.

    The checking’s done!

Firstly, when a post gets pulled to Google Plus, it is not necessary to have the post title and shortlink as part of the ‘message’. What gets posted on Google+ is a thumbnail, the post title and the URL to that post, all clickable. If there is any accompanying text to the post on WordPress, part of that will also be pulled as the ‘message’. Hence, I feel there is no need for the WordPress Publicize system to automatically add any other links to the post within that blank ‘message’ box.

Secondly, to make sure nothing gets posted if I do not wish it to be posted, when I prepare a Draft post, I make sure the Publicize checkbox is unchecked for that post, and I remove any title/shortlink text as well. This seems to work, as expected.

Thirdly, because Google+ is also about clickable hashtags, what I now do on those posts I do wish to be publicized on Google+ is to add some hashtags in that blank ‘message’ box, that is all. They get published, as expected.
