Publicize on Facebook – Friends cannot see posts

    Hi there

    I am using JetPack’s Publicize function to publish links to my latest blog posts to Facebook. Funny thing is, the posts appear in my timeline aka stream (that is, I can see them) but my friends cannot see them. I’ve doublechecked this via Facebook’s ‘View as’ function. The Facebook WordPress app is set up to be visible to my friends.

    So: OG tags are ok, app sec is ok. I can see JetPack’s posts in my timeline, my friends cannot. Duh.

    What am I missing?

    Hi there,

    The post visibility settings for posts shared to Facebook is controlled on their end, not ours.

    Go to your app settings on Facebook:

    https://web.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications

    Edit the WordPress item appearing there, and you should be able to change visibility settings for shares made via our service.

    Hi kokkieh, thank you for taking the time to look into this.

    My thought, if this was a widespread issue with Publicize, whether it originates from WP for FB, you guys here must’ve have heard about it.

    So, in Facebook on the actual post it shows as visible to your friends? In that case it can simply be that Facebook is not showing it in their feeds. So they can see the post, but they don’t see it because Facebook doesn’t show it to them.

    That, unfortunately, is how Facebook works. When you share anything to your profile or page, Facebook decides to whom of your friends/followers it’s going to show it, depending on if those friends have liked similar stuff in the past, what their interests are, how many likes, shares and comments your previous post got, etc. That is out of our, and your, control.

    Or if Facebook shows it’s visible to friends, but your friends can’t see it even if you give them a direct link to the post, that would be an issue on Facebook’s end. I haven’t heard of any other reports of that happening, and in fact just two days ago I Publicized a post from my own blog and it posted to Facebook just fine.

    All I can suggest from this end is to disconnect, both at My Site ->Sharing and by removing WordPress under your app settings in FB, and then reconnecting.

    again, thanks!

    It’s not a stream/feed/”whatever they call is these days” issue – I did check the visbility via the “View as …” function and the posts simply does not show.

    Thank you for confirming there’s no ongoing known issue – I will follow your recommendation and reconnect the apps.

    That is very strange. Please reach out to Facebook support as well in case it’s something they need to fix on their end. But I’ll ask our team to double check on our side as well.

    Let me know if reconnecting makes any difference.
