Publicize only working on my personal page instead of my fan page

    Hi There ~

This as happened to me twice with two different websites now.
I’ve gone through the whole process several times of connecting, disconnecting, deleting the wordpress app from facebook, then reconnecting, all in hopes of of simply linking to and posting on the facebook fan page, instead of the personal page.. when I get to that step where it has a popup with the option to post on either the personal page or the fan page, the fan page is not listed and there is no link to select or button to push for the ‘page’ .. even though there is one and it’s functioning fine.. why is this not working?

the page I want to post to: https://www.facebook.com/DrShirleyI

the page where it’s posting to: https://www.facebook.com/shirley.impellizzeri

    another example:
    it’s only posting here: https://www.facebook.com/silvia.bianco2

but I want it to post here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Chef-Silvia/136308993061626

    help please!!

  • Hi Nicole,

It looks like you’ve disabled the Publicize option for now, so I can’t debug the connection to see if there is a technical issue at play.

Can you visit https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications using the Facebook account you’re trying to use and remove the WordPress app from the listing there.

Then, revisit the Publicize settings in Settings->Sharing and reconnect to Facebook. During the process, you’ll be prompted to allow WordPress.com to do a number of different things, including Manage your Pages.

In my testing, I was able to duplicate this issue when connecting to Facebook and skipping that particular option, so the working hypothesis is that WordPress.com wasn’t allowed to manage your pages, thus couldn’t post.

Please let me know if that doesn’t resolve your issue and we’ll take another look. Thanks!

    Hi There!
So here’s whats I’m noticing.. I first built this site in a temporary subdirectory (new.drshirley.com) and then moved the site to the root domain (drshirley.com) .. so now when I walk through the publicize process and get to the last step in facebook, it tries to load this url:

    http://new.drshirley.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing&action=completed&service=facebook&id=4412715#_=_

    and I get this message:

The requested URL /2013/wp-admin/options-general.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I tried to manually fix it by simply deleting the ‘new.’ from the above url and it seemed to ‘fix’ the connection and I was back on the sharing page, with the pop-up saying:

You have successfully connected your blog with your Facebook account.
Publicize to my Facebook Wall: Shirley Impellizzeri
    Publicize to my Facebook Page:
Make this connection available to all users of this blog?

as you can see, nothing is listed after the ‘facebook page’ section ..

any thoughts about how to fix this? seems like I need to somehow reset the connection so its no longer looking fer new.drshirley.com

    Thanks so much!

  • Hey :-)

I can’t confirm if that alone would be causing the issue, but I’ve fixed the connection to point to the production site.

Go ahead and try resetting the Facebook connection on your end (removing WordPress.com from Facebook and deleting the Facebook connection in the Publicize settings), and try again. Just for the sake of santity, also please confirm the Facebook account you’re using has administrative rights on the page you’re wanting to publish to.

Let’s give it a whirl with the right URL in our system and remove that as a possible cause. Perfect world, that would fix it.

Thanks for your patience and for the additional info!

HI and thanks for all of your awesome support. So I went through the process again and it did ‘skip’ the broken link step and went straight back to the sharing settings.. which is a good sign. however that final pop-up still doesn’t list her actual page, so still i cannot click and select it . bizarre. Do you think that this means that you shouldn’t set up publicize until the site files are at their permanent final location? somehow did that mess up the connection? .. honestly now that I think about it, even while developing the site at new. drshirley.com, I do not remember it working then either. not sure what to think…?

  • Hey again,

Did you remove the WordPress.com link on https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications too before reconnecting? I only ask again because in my testing I did notice that if “manage pages” was an allowed setting (which is prompted when setting up WP.com on Facebook for the first time), it won’t display pages and won’t give an indication that they aren’t being shown (part of the security in place by Facebook).

The other hypothesis, short of an actual bug, is that the Facebook account isn’t authorized as an administrator of the page we’re trying to add.

As far as setting up Publicize too early, the issue is actually a step before that. When activating Jetpack and connecting it to your WordPress.com account, the URL of the site is used for a few various things. Jetpack, as of a few months ago, now has an option that you can turn on during site development that would prevent the connection requirement. (Details: http://jetpack.me/2013/03/28/jetpack-dev-mode-release/ ). In such a case, you would setup Publcize as part of launching the site.

One thing I notice from your original post is this page: https://www.facebook.com/DrShirleyI is reporting as not found. Is the page hidden/private, perhaps?

Thanks for your patience as we figure out what’s going on!

Hey! Well a JetPack update fixed the issue.. AMEN! so just curious, when you said that you fixed the connection to point to the production site, how did you do that? Just curious is this is something I should know in the future. Thanks so much!!

  • Well, good. I should have thought to ask you to check for a Jetpack update ;-)

It’s something that I can do internally here, so nothing new for you to know. Ideally, Jetpack would only be connected to WordPress.com once it is in the final resting place for the site, but sometimes that isn’t an option.

If you run into an issue where the wp.me shortlinks aren’t working (the usual reason folks notice the mismatch), just open a new thread here and it’ll be marked for staff attention for us to resolve.

    Thanks!
