publicizing my posts on LinkedIn
-
When I automatically publish posts to Facebook and Twitter I have no problems. When I publish to LinkedIn, the thumbnail looks something like this:
I know – been a long time. Happy to be back. Promise to be more prolific. On to the news… Interesting quandary, this IOC Rule 40. It’s part of the IOC’s Social Media, Blogging and Internet Guidelines, which you can…
or this:
(With a nod and an apology to H.L. Mencken.) I, like many people I know (none of them journalists), *love* HBO’s The Newsroom. It seems many people I don’t know like the show as well, judging by the growth in viewership since its debut…

The above examples, for some reason, are fine when i cut and paste from LinkedIn. In fact, thought, this is what they look like on LI:

And now I feel like an idiot! When the posts publish to LinkedIn, words and sentences are interspersed with symbols and other distractions that make the the thumbnails hard to read. See my linked in page for example: http://www.linkedin.com/in/pamspevak
Thanks.

Yes, LinkedIn has recently adjusted their layout. I’m not a fan of the new look in this particular aspect, it does make them quite difficult to read and notice. Unfortunately, there really is nothing that we can do from this end.

Hi…
I pinged customer support at LinkedIn and got the following response:
“It looks like this might be an issue with the way the external WordPress.com interface is sharing information with our system. Unfortunately this isn’t much I can check on this side to resolve the issue.
I’d suggest contacting WordPress directly about this to see if they track down the source of the problem.”
I’m feeling a little bit like monkey in the middle here. Any suggestions? (Btw, I tried cutting and pasting and the result is no different than with automatic publishing.) Thanks much./Pam

Hm, it’s rather odd that this issue would appear right after their major redesign, and we haven’t made any changes to Publicize for LinkedIn in quite a few months.
Do you have any luck if you reconnect with LinkedIn? http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#reconnecting-linkedin

Hm, that’s no good. Ok, to make sure that you and I are looking at the same problem, would you please take a screenshot of what you see, then upload it via Media -> Add New in your blog’s Dashboard?
-
I just uploaded the screen shot. You’ll see 2 blog posts that appear along the right rail on my profile page. The first one (“Those who can – do. Those who can’t – are jealous”) I cut and paste to see if that would resolve the problem (obviously it didn’t). The second one (“Olympic Athletes, Rock Stars…”) was auto publicized. Thanks much.

Oh, I see the problem here. You’re using smart quotes/apostrophes (curly) rather than standard quotes/apostrophes (straight).
The curly ones aren’t actually real characters and need some added unicode to be processed, which is what you’re seeing on LinkedIn.
For example, #8217; is the actual data provided when a smart (curly) apostrophe is used, rather than the basic ‘ that is provided when a straight apostrophe is used.
Really, this is something that LinkedIn needs to fix as they are not properly processing smart (curly) quotes/apostrophes. However, you can avoid this by just typing them straight from your keyboard and not copying and pasting your posts from a word processor.

That is wacky, but hopefully we’ve figured it out; I really appreciate your persistence (LinkedIn has been no help at all). Q for you though: not sure I follow when you say I can avoid this by just typing the quotes/apostrophes straight from my keyboard and not copying and pasting my posts from a word processor. I don’t use Word or any other word processing app when I write my posts – I write and edit them directly in WordPress, and I use the quote/apostrophe key on my keyboard – what am I missing?
-
Hm, that is odd then. I checked your posts and they do have the right quotes and apostrophes, so something weird is definitely happening on LinkedIn’s end.
