Publicizing to Google
-
I have a couple of sites that I’ve connected to Google+ using the new feature and have a question on whether it is possible to set up different publicize/sharing options on different sites.
I first connected my personal site (justjennifer) to Google+ and limited sharing only to my Circles.
On my second connection (gammagirl) I added “Public” sharing on Google+.
Now it appears that my personal site is also being shared publicly.
Is it then not possible to have different settings for different sites? As the current Support docs do not seem to cover this, I’m asking here. Thanks for looking.

Hi justjennifer,
Google+ can be pretty confusing, and we’re trying to figure out all of the issues we can add to clarify the documentation for the users.
In this case, as a developer explained, the publicity/permissions level thing that you grant at Google happens at an “application wide” level.
The upshot of this is that you can’t have different settings for different sites, or possibly for the same Google+ account across different WordPress.com users. We’re still working through all these cases though, to figure out what is and is not possible.

Hi Jackiedana – That’s sort of what I expected given the above observation, and appreciate the confirmation. Here again, it would be good to make it clear in the documentation as well.
I most probably will be removing the Publicize to G+ on my personal site and continue to use the G+ sharing button, which does allow one to select to which circles the post is shared.
However, will removing the Publicize to G+ option also remove any authorship associated? It is not entirely clear to me if these are separate functions.
Thanks again.

So, to answer my own question, and for anyone else interested, removing the Publicize to G+ on my personal site also removed it on the other sites I had later connected.
Curiously, however, only my personal site lost the G+ authorship under sharing, which I added back without problem.

This is straight from one of our developers who worked on the Google+ connection. I hope it clarifies things for you. Please note that any limitations here are a result of how Google+ is set up.
Profile and Publicize settings are per user/per site. So they apply to a specific user, for a specific site only. A user will need need to connect on each site they want it to be active on.
For the Public vs Circles thing, Google has a single setting there, for all uses of the connection for a single user (across all blogs). So if a user connects 3 different blogs to G+, using a combination of Profile connections and Publicize, all of that will only have 1 setting for who gets to see it on G+ (Public, Circles, etc).
Shared (on Publicize) means that any user who publishes a post will trigger Publicize for that connection. So if user A connects a G+ account on a blog, and makes it Shared, then user B publishes something on that same blog, it’ll be published to the account that user A connected.
