Published blog post not appearing under site pages
-
I have created 4 site pages which shows on my home front page. One of them called ‘Writings’. When I go to my published posts, I can see all 7 articles I’ve written, but only 4 of them shows under my site page ‘writing’. How can I get the other 3 to be also visiible in the drop down menu? They are all selected under the same catwgory. I’m still new to wordpress, so not famaliar with all the termologie yet.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
What’s the address (URL) of the site that you’re referring to? I don’t find a “Writing” category page on the site https://byelizmablom.wordpress.com.

So, it’s the latest three posts in https://byelizmablom.wordpress.com/category/writings-and-readings/ that don’t show up in the “Readings” menu, right?
You can set up menus like that a couple of ways. One is to set it up to automatically pull in all of the posts in a specific category. Another is to set it up manually by creating a top “Readings” menu item and then manually adding any posts or pages you want under that menu item one-by-one.
It looks to me like you may have set it up manually instead of as a category. There’s more information at https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/ about how to set up a category menu item.

Thanks for the help. : )
There are presently no posts in the category page https://byelizmablom.wordpress.com/category/writings-and-readings/, which means that no published posts have the category “Writing and Reading” assigned to them. Did you find posts there previously?
-
@musicdoc1 Yes, there were seven posts in that category when I replied earlier. Given that all seven posts are now under the Readings menu item and all of them are now uncategorized, I presume @elizmablom593261250 manually added them to her Readings menu instead of making the Readings menu item a category list.

You guys were helpful, thanx! I managed to solve the problem. Is it really necessary to have categories, since my page are published as posts. Don’t really see what is the difference.
-
Categories can be helpful, especially if you have a lot of posts and/or a wide variety of topics. In this case, for example, if you kept all of the posts assigned to the “Writings and Readings” category and then made the “Readings” menu item a category listing for that category, all future posts assigned to the “Writings and Readings” category would automatically appear under the “Readings” menu item without you having to do anything.
-
Thanks again. : )
I agree with @melancholia that having the category menu item link to category pages rather than static pages would be the best solution, for the reasons described directly above, but you’re free to leave the menu categories as there are if you prefer. However, do you know that (for example) the “Reading” menu item links to this empty page: https://byelizmablom.wordpress.com/readings/? If it were linked to a category page instead the the page would include all of the posts in that category.
An alternative, should you prefer to stick with the static pages, is to insert Display Posts Shortcode into them. You could limit the shortcode to a single category by including the appropriate argument in the code.

Wow, this sound all Greek, especially since I’ve never really dealth with blogs or websites.
What I saw is when I added a category to a post and I then went to customise, menu, add item and published the category….that post will appear twice on the home page. Once under the drop down menu ‘writings’ and then ahain together will all the other post under ‘readings and writings’. For me the only difference is that the category option group all the specific post underneath each other on the same page, while with the drop down menu, one can easier choose which blog you want to read. Do I understand this correctly?Think I need to start at the basics just to understand what the difference is between a page and category, leaving comments, etc. Is the main purpose of wordpress to be a blog or can it serve the purpose of a website as well? If I would like to generate money from this blog in the future, is it better to have it as a blog where people can comment or will a website be fine to generate money? (Wonder if that will ever happen. Lol)
But most of all, is there not a you tube video that shows you what the different termologie is and how to use wordpress? For instance plugins. I’ve never heard about this. Or I need to meet you guys and you can train me. Haha. Learning practically is way better.

There are a lot of great training materials at https://learn.wordpress.com/ and https://en.support.wordpress.com/, including a glossary of WordPress-specific lingo at https://learn.wordpress.com/glossary/ that’s a really good place to start.

Elizma,

Yes, that’s understood. I agree that the drop-down menu can provide easier access to individual posts. However, a lot of people don’t know about drop-down menus, and it’s more likely that they will click on a category menu item rather than hover over it to display the sub-menu items.
Is the main purpose of wordpress to be a blog or can it serve the purpose of a website as well?
That’s up to you. It can be one or the other, or both. The support page Do I Need a Website, a Blog, or a Website with a Blog? might be helpful.

Generally, the more ways you provide for people to find your posts the better.
So, for example, if you use both links to category pages and drop-down menus in the header menu, and add a category widget to a sidebar or footer widget area, you’ve provided three different ways to reach all of your posts. You can also add other widgets such as a Recent Posts Widget, Top Posts and Pages Widget or a Text Widget with Display Posts Shortcode inserted into it.
