  Hi I’ve completed my site, it’s ready to go live so I would like to publish it now (with a domain I already own). Is it enough if I transfer or connect my domain then it will be done? Do I need to do anything else?

  WP.com: Yes
  Correct account: Yes

  It’s more a personal preference type of thing, really.

  Domain Connection allows you to keep the domain registered with your current domain registrar and direct it to your WordPress.com site: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

  A transfer would allow to manage both your site and domain from the same place: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

  So, basically, are you an “all of your eggs in one basket” type of person, or “not all of your eggs in one basket”? :)

  No, we’re a fully hosted service, so once you have a site here, you’re hosted here, even under our Free plan. :)

  So nice to hear that:) One last question; if I choose to connect my domain now but later on change my mind and want to transfer it (or vice versa), is it possible to do without a data loss?

  The domain is just the domain, your content will remain here, but you can move elsewhere by following the steps at https://move.wordpress.com/

  So now I try to connect my domain name, but when I remove WordPress.com PRO from my cart and just leave the domain connection fee, it doesn’t go forward but jumps back to the ‘Use a domain I know’ page in the beginning

  Hi @heiketextilien,

  A plan upgrade is required to connect a domain, as well as to set a primary domain.

  It’s worth noting that with a plan upgrade, you can transfer your domain to WordPress.com, extending its expiry by a year.

  Thank you for your reply, but then is there no way to publish a site/go live in free plan? Would it make a difference if I choose transferring my domain, would I still in every case upgrade to PRO plan?

  You can launch your site while on a free plan, however will need a plan upgrade to set a primary domain, even if you were to transfer it without having an active plan.
