Publishing

    Hi,
Although I keep “publishing” posts and pages they are not appearing where expected which has the URL – ashfordnottip
If I use the short link http://wp.me/P5KNbW-R ,for example, that page appears appears as it should be.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi there,

The link you shared goes to a published page rather than a post. Is that what you meant to add? Here’s more info on the difference between pages and posts:

    Pages vs. Posts

Because it’s a page, it’s listed in your menu rather than in your list of posts. Your theme hides your menu by default, so that may be why you are having a hard time finding it.

If you click the red circle with three lines at the top of your site, your menu will open and you’ll see a direct link to the page in question.

It’s called #53 (NO TITLE). It doesn’t have a title because instead of putting the title in the title box, you put it in the body of the page.

    Does that help?

If you tell me more about where you’d like your posts and pages to appear, I’ll be happy to help you get things set up the way you want them.

    Hi Liz,
It is very good of you to help!
I suspect that I started out not being clear whether to have a blog or a website.
What is of first importance is that people like me – or even with less knowledge of IT – are able to easily find the site.
Now, if I search ‘ashfordnottip’ there are just odd posts/pages from a week ago.

It was quite easy making posts but now they are a complete mess.
Do I start again inventing a different name?
    Thanks again,

    Graham K

Do I start again inventing a different name?

That’s definitely not necessary. It takes awhile for any new site to build a following and to build up enough authority to be easily found in a search engine like Google–which is how a lot of people look for websites. If you start over you’ll just have to wait longer :)

It was quite easy making posts but now they are a complete mess.

Can you tell me more about what you mean by this? I do see one page without a title, which should be fixed, but other than that it seems like you are off to a good start.

If you could tell me a little more about what you are hoping to get out of the site I can help you make any tweaks you need to get closer to your goal.

    Hi Liz,

    Thanks for your offer!
It maybe best if I give some background to this website.
I have produced others but they were far less ambitious.
It may be that WordPress might gain eventually from our experience together as you will see below.

My aim is to produce a website that can be used by political activists who have been drawn together by a young genius who realised that how the Web could be used in a novel way. You can see one page/post at
    http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/2015/02/05/nhs-day-of-action-faqs/

Due to the effectiveness of this approach a small group in Ashford were able to gather over 100 people to a public meeting where there have been none for over 10 years!
And this was despite the refusal of the local media to give any proper coverage even though members of the EU parliament were due there!

Our right wing government now prevents NGOs from getting involved in any political action so 38 degrees supports any political action that has serious support. Hence the messages about the NHS above (National Health Service) that many fear will soon be ‘americanised’!

So we have situation where, for now, new members of a group can only meet up by coming to a Day of Action and exchange email addresses, etc.
My TTIP group have delegated me to go to the the NHS demo. So that they know we exist – in the same town!

What I think is needed is a website where these groups can exchange info etc via a website.
Although WordPress illustrates a number of themes I can find none that cover our needs.
I hope I am wrong as it would save so many headaches!

The potential for such websites in the UK is enormous!

    Hi Graham,

If I understand correctly, you would like to setup your site as a forum of sorts where individuals could meet and exchange their information. Is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Jeremey,

Not exactly. I expect a forum will be needed LATER but for now we need a website that offers information on local activities that is easy to use but can be expanded later.
Many people are still computer shy!
I have found one of your Themes that seems a possibility – Collective – but wonder how easy it will be to use?
As none of us has used an advanced website before and we don’t know how things will develop it is quite difficult to decide!

Based on how you are describing the site you want to build, You might want to consider the P2 theme:

    https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/p2/

It’s a simple theme designed for conversations and short updates. It’s also very easy for site members to post their updates, questions and comments from the front page of the site, rather than having to log into the back end for every post.

It’s also the theme that we used for internal blogs at Automattic, and the theme that inspired our current internal blogging tools. You can read more about how we use it here.

    How P2 Changed Automattic

Let me know what you think.

    Hi Liz,

Thanks for your help but I’ve come to realise that this needs more research-experiments before I know what is really needed.
    Will be back later
    Graham

P.S. I got an email with your first reply but none since!
