Publishing failed. An unknown error occurred.

I’m getting this error message:
“Publishing failed. An unknown error occurred.”
when I attempt to save my work (update)
This first started, when I switched from Classic to Block editor.
Next, I updated the theme from ‘Twenty Eleven’ to ‘Redhill’ — thinking that the newer theme would solve the problem, but the error still persists.
Thanks. – James Ingram

Hi James,
that sounds like a local issue, it might be related to your browser or your internet connection in general. What browser do you use?
Could you please try to clear your browser’s cache? You can find here more information on how to clear the cache depending on your browser:
If that doesn’t help, try to use another browser.
Let us know how that goes. -
Thanks for your reply.
BROWSER: I was using the almost-latest version of Chrome browser Version 80.0.3987.122 on Macintosh OS Mojave 10.14.6.
CACHE: Per your suggestion, I cleared the browser’s cache, and restarted the browser.
I still got the same error in Chrome.
I found that if I switched back to the Classic editor in Chrome, I could then save the updates.
I have been using this same computer/browser/network combination for years to edit this and other WordPress.com sites, plus Blogger and Facebook sites (plus several WordPress.org sites that someone set up for me, that I muddle through the editing).
The problems all seemed to start the same day that I switched from classic to Gutenberg editor – so I am surmising that this is a Gutenberg-related issue ???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SWITCHED TO FIREFOX BROWSER:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Per your suggestion, I tried a different browser (Firefox).
It appeared to open in Gutenberg editor, and it appears that I can save the updates when using Firefox.
So I will try this browser for future editing, and see what happens.
I have to admit, I am certainly CONFUSED.

Does it work under Chrome if you disable all extensions? https://support.google.com/chrome_webstore/answer/2664769?hl=en
If so, re-enable each one individually until you find the one causing the problem.
-
Now I am even more CONFUSED.
The REASON Why I Am Confused:
Today I opened that same page in editing mode
( https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/meridianmanordance.wordpress.com/241 )
in Chrome, and now it displays ok.When I wrote the Mar. 4 note, the page was “garbled” in Chrome in the editing window.
But it displayed ok on the web page that the public views.
(I should have made a screen capture of the garbled editing window, but I didn’t think of that.)==> QUESTION 1: Is it possible, that editing the page in Firefox, somehow FIXED the problem ??
……….
QUESTION: (for future correspondence)I’m new to this forum.
It appears there is NO way to upload an image (screen capture of the problem) directly to the forum.==> QUESTION 2: Is there any way to upload an image directly to this forum, or do I need to upload it to another site, and then insert the link in my forum post ??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FYI: THE EXTENSIONS:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The extensions in Chrome that are active are:
* Google Docs Offline
* LastPass: Free Password ManagerCHROME APPS
* Docs
* Sheets
* SlidesP.S.: I’m getting “educated”, as I had no idea this “chrome://extensions” page existed.
I added LastPass myself, but the other stuff I am not familiar with.……….
THANKS AGAIN for your assistance. -
Hi, editing the page in FF probably didn’t fix anything, but I’m glad to hear this was resolved!
There’s no way to upload a screenshot here, but generally if you’ll upload to your media library we can see that, or you can upload to https://snipboard.io and add a link to it here.
-
Another question, re UNDERLINING:
It appears that this Redhill theme is set to make links underlined — which I prefer.
But it seems to be inconsistent.
If you refer to the screen capture at https://snipboard.io/JX2bBe.jpg , some links are underlined, and some are not.
The 4th link down, identified as “TEST NOTE #1:”, the links shows underlined in the Edit window, but not underlined when viewed as the public sees it.
QUESTION: Is there anything I can do, to get ALL of these links underlined ??
Thanks.
-
It looks like the links in lists will not be underlined by default.
As an alternative, you can try to underline them manually, if you use classic editor, you can try with some HTML, with the Block Editor, you should be able to do it by clicking on the small arrow on the toolbar, like this: https://d.pr/i/lqV3sKI hope that helps :)

Just a couple of “FYI: comments:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SAVE ERROR:
Re the “failed to save” error, I still get this in Chrome (on Mac).
It seems to work ok so far when using Firefox.
So I should probably just use Firefox — as long as that works ok.What’s puzzling, is that I also use Chrome for editing a few WordPress.org sites, and so far I have not gotten this error.
REDHILL UNDERLINING ERROR:
I submitted this as a separate topic, at
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/redhill-theme-failing-to-underline-links/THANKS for all your assistance.
-
Regarding “failed to save”, we aren’t able to reproduce this in Chrome using no extensions. Have you tried disabling all Chrome extensions to see if the error persists? If you haven’t tried that yet, that’s the next best step.
Thank you for posting the Redhill underline question over in forums > themes. :)
