publishing images i found on google

  I want to make a website with the pictures of administrators at my university. The images will be accompanied with captions critical of their role on campus.
  I got the pictures from various sources but mostly from the university website.
  Am I legally allowed to republish the pictures on my blog?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Not unless you have permission from the copyright holder, so you can write to the university communications office and ask. I doubt they’ll say yes.

  You can search Flickr for photos which are CC licensed, and those you ARE allowed to use.

  I suggest you familiarise yourself with the law as it pertains to libel, too, given your intention. Being a blogger doesn’t give you the right to malign people with impunity.

  But being critical of people is allowed speech. I’m strongly opposed to the spread of self-censorship when the speech itself is legal. There’s no indication that actionable speech ie libel is involved here.

  I wouldn’t want to live in a world where it was illegal to criticize people.
