punctuation marks in hebrew (left to right language)
-
Hebrew is a left to right language. To use hebrew I do “Alt Shift” – thia give me a hebrew font, and then I align the text so that it is right aligned.
My problem is that when I want to for example put a “.” “?” or “!” at the end of the sentance – it comes out at he beging of the new line – if I continue to write in hebrew in the same paragraph then the charachter is in the correct place. Adding to text to the end of the paragraph is also difficlt I need to rpess “END” – clicking at the end of the paragraph doesn’t work
Here is what it looks right (going into hebrew)
אבגדהו.The period is at the right of teh hebrew letters instead of the right.
In the middle of a sentance it works ok
אבגדהו.זחטיThis does not happen in other places for example the hep forum in wordpress.org
Thanks

Sorry – I have some mistakes in the previous post – here is the correct version

Hi Yonatan,
I gave this a try myself and see exactly what you mean. Is there any way you could type up your blog posts in an text editor or word processor, then copy and paste them into your posts? I know that’s not an ideal solution. Hopefully others will be able to help more.
Kind regards,

I’m using twenty twelve.
After I wrote the question I noticed that when the page is displayed it’s ok – the punctuation is in the correct place – it only looks weird in the editorJason – using an editor is ofcourse a solution – but making changes later is very problematic. I’d prefer that the wordpress.com guys solve the problem…. :-(
Thanks
Yonatan

Yonatan,
It sounds like you have determined that this is only an issue in the editor and not in the actual display of the page. It sounds like this is a possible bug in the Visual Editor.

Hi Yonatan,
The behavior you mentioned can happen if you switch to right-aligned text rather than switching the entire writing direction to right-to-left text. In Chrome, for example, you can right-click in the editor, and select Writing Direction > Right to Left. That will ensure that the punctuation appears in the correct place in your text.
Here’s a screenshot of that selection in Chrome: https://cloudup.com/cPuiJK31jPe
Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Hm, didn’t seem to work so well after hitting the submit button! LOL
Here’s a forum post by easiercrisis I finally found (after I remembered where to look for it) that has another suggestion:
If you are using languages that read and right from right-to-left (RTL) such as Hebrew and Arabic in the same post use the HTML Tag “dir=rtl” to make sure it is formatted correctly.
Instructions:
1. Go to the HTML tab of the post.
2. In the paragraphs that read from right-to-left add “dir=rtl” to the paragraph tag so it reads: <p dir=rtl>. -
Yeah, the forums here don’t have right-to-left styles so it doesn’t work so well here. ;)
Thanks for sharing that other forum post! That’s also helpful if you have a blog that mixes languages, so you can have the blog language set to a left-to-right language but still include some paragraphs in a right-to-left language.
As for other browsers, I did some looking around (I use Chrome for my own writing so I’m not as familiar off-hand with the options elsewhere):
- In Safari, you can right-click and choose Paragraph Direction > Right to Left
- In Firefox and IE, I couldn’t find a built-in option, but it’s possible that a browser add-on/extension or other setting could allow it
That said, another option is to change your interface language in your account settings to a right-to-left language. In that case, the text direction in the editor will automatically be set to right-to-left instead of left-to-right.

Great – it works here as well
Rachelmcr – you indeed make me happy – is “happiness engineer” something you guys made up ? (in google it seem that “you” is Automattic)
Thanks all

Hi Yonatan,
I’m glad that works for you!
I’m not sure if Automattic was the first company to come up with the title “Happiness Engineer” but it definitely makes my job fun. :) Please let me know if I can do anything more to help.

Thank you both! I decided to make a separate, much smaller site.
I’m wondering now, is there a way to make a little ע icon somewhere? -

But still, maybe you know the answer. I wanted to add a Hebrew page or two to my mostly English site. I couldn’t get the punctuation to work so… I decided to make a separate site and the English site has one page in Hebrew with a link. And now I’m wondering, as you may already know… if there’s a way to make a little ע icon that shows up on the navbar.
