  I noticed when I signed up for WordPress the site said free for the first year and that I will be charged after the first year. During the set up portion it asks for payment. Is this accurate?

  Hi, the domain transfer / registration is included in the first year with a paid plan, so it will ask for payment if you’ve selected a custom domain.

  Otherwise, if you choose a free subdomain and a free plan, the site is free indefinitely. It will just have ads and fewer features:
