Purchase Domain Name & Transition to wordpress.org

    Hi there,

We’re interested in purchasing a new domain name example: blog.fabrily.com as well as purchasing the guided transfer to wordpress.org

I had a few questions about this; my main concern is if we purchase a new domain name will all of the original links we’ve used for old blog posts be lost? Or will people be redirected to the new URL (301 redirected? with the same content as the old one)?

If we move to wordpress.org we would have to purchase a domain name anyways correct? Would it be better to purchase the domain name beforehand to help ensure we won’t lose the content/encounter link errors?

    Thanks,
    Kate

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can direct visitors from fabrily.wordpress.com to your new domain with a Site Redirect Upgrade:

    Site Redirect

If you are not going to host your content at WordPress.com, you can register a domain elsewhere and use the Site Redirect Upgrade to make sure that visitors to your old site find your new site.

Let us know if you have any more questions :-)

    Thanks for your response.

If we register a new domain through wordpress.com do we also have to purchase the redirect upgrade?

We want to change the way our links are displayed on the new .org blog site: http://example.com/sample-post/ instead of http://example.com/2014/10/21/sample-post/.

So if we purchase the domain name through wordpress.com before making the transition, it should automatically redirect everything for us correct? Then when we move the blog from wordpress.com to .org – we’ll be able to publish all new posts in the new url format (http://example.com/sample-post/) and all of our previous posts will be re-directed without issue?

No. You can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

If you’re not going to host your content on WordPress.com, we recommend you register your domain elsewhere, to avoid undue confusion.

    Keep in mind:

In order for the Site Redirect to work correctly, the permalinks on the new site (the one you’re redirecting to) should match those at WordPress.com. WordPress.com uses the following permalink structure:

    http://example.com/2014/10/21/sample-post/

If the new site you’re redirecting to does not use this permalink structure, the redirect will try to find a post on your new site that matches the post URL from your WordPress.com site, but some visitors may see an error message indicating no matching post could be found.

    Site Redirect
