PURCHASE OF DOMAIN
-
Hi!
I am thinking of purchasing a domain with you. I just started blogging with wordpress. My question is:
If I register my domain with you do I get web hosting aswell?
Can I customize my webpage?
Will I be able to download plugins?
Can I make it into a “normal webpage” in the future, I mean not as a blog. And the last one, a couple of years ago I bought a domain at go daddy, then I converted my page into wordpress but it was free. Has this changed?
Thanks!
Kind regards
KarolinaThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

<blokquote>If I register my domain with you do I get web hosting as well?
yesCan I customize my webpage?
Only if you also purchase an annually domain mapping upgrade as well. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
Will I be able to download plugins?
No.
There is no FTP access and no plugin capability on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes anything at all stated here http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ FTP access, and plugins are available only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.
Please read > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/Can I make it into a “normal webpage” in the future, I mean not as a blog.
You don’t need a domain to do that.
A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication.
A website is a page based site designed to operate as a one way means of communication ie. a noticeboard.
Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based. For greater clarity read > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/07/25/create-a-wordpress-website-step-by-step/
Then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/
On one hand, none of the characteristic “blog” features like categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog, without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.

Please read: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading
The subscription for domain mapping an existing domain is $13.00 per year per blog. And you need to have an underlying .wordpress.com blog URL to domain map from to the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog and purchase upgrades for it.
If you would like to use your domain name purchased elsewhere and map from your free hosted wordpress.com blog to it, then you will first need to set up domain mapping by following these steps. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Thank you!! But I don’t understand one thing, If I buy my domain I won’t be able to download plugins? I have always been able to download plugins with other sites I have had with wordpress.
Has wordpress changed lately?
I remember my last webpage, I bought my domain and web hosting with go daddy, then I converted the page to wordpress and it was free of charge (this was 2 years ago)..

Nothing has changed. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and have separate logins.

We have never had FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and have never been able to upload plugins or third party themes. You are obviously referring to WordPress.ORG installs. http://wordpress.org

Here’s a somewhat related and completely n00b question (preceded by expository description).
I bought a wordpress.com domain. Now I’m looking to set myself up with a wordpress.org site hosted elsewhere. It’s my impression that my options are to either transfer the domain registration to another place or change nameserver info in my DNS settings to match those provided by my new web hosting service.
If that’s a somewhat accurate understanding and I do the latter, keeping my domain registration with WP.com, am I going to run into trouble trying to use FTP with the domain? Would it just be easier to transfer the domain elsewhere? The web hosting I’m signing up for doesn’t do domain registration anyways, so I’d just as well keep my domain with WP.com unless it’s going to mess up my ability to use FTP somehow as I pursue this whole WordPress.org situation.
Like I said, n00b question.

No, you can still use FTP with a WP.org blog. It doesn’t matter who the domain registrar is for that.
