Purchased Personal plan but still redirected to free .wordpress.com domain
-
Hello,
I have purchased an upgrade for my domain name: the-gypsy-journal.com
But, on my browser URL, I am still getting redirected to https://radiant-gypsyjournaltm.wordpress.com/
I can see both the domains listed in Upgrade -> Domain, but I am unable to redirect to the-gypsy-journal.com, nor can I delete the existing free domain: https://radiant-gypsyjournaltm.wordpress.com/
Domain name: the-gypsy-journal.com has STATUS – Active.
So, doesn’t look like an activation issue.
Please help me get the domain name to “NOT” get redirected. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Upon investigating further, looks like the profile was created with a free domain name – radiant-gypsyjournaltm.wordpress.com, but instead of upgrading that domain name to a paid plan, I have created a new domain, and upgraded the new domain name the-gypsy-journal.com as a Paid domain name.
Is there, a way to delete the free .wordpress.com domain name, and make the the-gypsy-journal.com as the Primary domain name? -
Hi there, do both of these addresses appear in your site’s Domain dashboard? If so what you need to do is set the-gypsy-journal.com as your primary address.
Here’s how you do that https://wordpress.com/support/domains/set-a-primary-address/#how-to-change-the-primary-address
If you accidentally purchased your domain separately separately from the Personal plan, please post back here.

Hi justjennifer,
I do not see a drop down menu in the box “Primary Site Address”.
In the Box that I have, I have the following message:
“Your site plan doesn’t allow to set a custom domain as a primary site address. Upgrade your plan and get a free one-year domain registration or transfer with any annual paid plan. Learn more.”
Looks like, I purchased a new domain separately from the Personal Plan. -
I’ve gone ahead and flagged your thread for Staff assistance in getting this straightened out for you. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.
-
Thank you justjennifer.
Do I get an update here?
I guess I’m still awaiting any action on this free .wordpress domain. -
You just have to sit back and wait untill a Staff member is available … which can take some time… sorry for my cynism 🤣
-
Hi,
I’m not sure if I lose activity on my website, if it gets sorted out, or how it does.
The website gets redirected to .wordpress still, and as I still wait for Staff intervention to sort this out.
Will I retain the activity on my website, even if I change primary domains? -
-
Hi @gypsyjournaltm,
to be able to set it as primary domain you need to purchase a plan. Primary domain changes are only allowed with a plan.
Hope that helps,
Andrija -
Regarding your A and B. Did you actually purchase an annual plan (which would have included a free custom domain for a year) or did you just purchase the custom domain?
If you did just purchase the domain on its own you need to purchase a monthly or annual plan as well to make that custom domain the primary domain.
I’d be very careful of cancelling a domain you actually want to use in future as things could then get even more complicated.

Maybe I don’t understand it comprehensively, but allow me to explain the issue in timelines:
I came across a plan to create a WordPress website – I went from “get Started” to eventually getting a free domain with domain name –
radiant-gypsyjournaltm.wordpress.com
I DID NOT go ahead with the annual plan purchase on this one.
A few weeks later, I revisited the website, with the same intention of creating a website, hence getting a domain name purchased.
I used the same email address as the previous free domain name (I was under the impression this would automatically upgrade the free domain name to the upgraded one) – and created the domain name – the-gypsy-journal.com
Now, I notice that – the first domain name is still treated as the primary address, and the paid domain name redirects to the first one – probably because the first domain name(free) was the first domain name on wordpress.com.
Can you please help the-gypsy-journal.com NOT redirect to radiant-gypsyjournaltm.wordpress.com ? -

>>>
@themagicrobot – I don’t think I understand how to answer this question.
I did purchase an annual plan – chose the-gypsy-journal.com as the domain name for the paid one.
I don’t know / can’t recall if this refers to purchasing an annual plan or a custom domain in itself…Please help understand as well. Thanks in advance. -
How much did you pay when you purchased the custom domain on 24th January? It looks to me like you just purchased the custom domain itself rather than a Personal plan. Without an upgrade from the free plan you can’t make the custom domain the primary domain. The custom domain address will still work for anyone typing it into a browser but as you say, it will always redirect to the basic first address without a paid plan in place.
-
Hi @themagicrobot,
I paid INR 1281.48, which roughly translates to USD 14.7.
I would want to make the-gypsy-journal.com to be the primary domain, if possible.
Should I ask for a refund, and then proceed with an upgrade of the free .wordpress domain, so that I don’t have to purchase it twice? -
Should I ask for a refund
No, asking for a refund at this point would essentially cancel your domain purchase. If you go ahead and purchase the Personal plan as well, either staff will refund the domain purchase or perhaps the domain purchase will be used to renew your domain for another year.
Domains are included only for the first year of any plan. After that you’ll pay for the plan and the domain renewal separately.

Thanks @justjennifer.
I have upgraded the plan. I have successfully made the-gypsy-journal.com as the primary domain name. Thanks a lot for the help.
Do I need to raise a separate forum chat to extend the domain to 2-year instead of a 1-year(default), considering I paid for a custom domain without purchasing a plan?
Thanks again for continued advice. -
@gypsyjournaltm please ignore the spammer reply just above.
I’ve gone ahead and flagged this thread since it gives the history of what happened. Staff will advise what they are able to do since they can also see the purchase history on your account.
Please be patient for staff to revert. Thanks.

@gypsyjournaltm I understand you bought a domain, then a plan, and you’re wondering if you can get some credit for the domain since the plan comes with a free domain. The promotional domain credit is only valid with new domains or transfers, but we may be able to work something out.
Would you like to open a direct request through wordpress.com/help or shall we email you?
