Purchasing and Building a site while I'm live on another server

Hi – I’ve seen quite a few posts about creating a new WordPress site while you have a live WordPress site, but, what about when my site is live elsewhere? Can I go ahead and purchase the whole package and start the work, with my current domain, as long as it’s still pointed to my current site?

Hi there,
There are two versions of WordPress. WordPress.com, and self-hosted.
If your site is on another server, that means it’s self-hosted and using the WordPress.org software. That is completely separate and different from having a site on WordPress.com.
And ONLY the content, i.e. posts and pages, can be moved between the two versions. If you build a site on your own server or hosting account there is no way to move the entire site to WordPress.com, and vice versa. Only the content can be moved, not the theme, plugins, or anything else.

Thank you so much for replying. I believe I didn’t state my question clearly enough. I have a current live site completely separate from WordPress. We would like to make the switch to WordPress. I know this will take a lot of footwork recreating everything.
My question is if purchasing the full package with hosting on WordPress.com will affect my current site before I repoint the domain.Thanks for helping. I look forward to your reply.

PS: Although it states above that this is a blog, it’s going to be a full site. That was an autofill sentence after my original post that I couldn’t change.

As I said above, self-hosted sites are completely separate from WordPress.com, so nothing you do on WordPress.com can affect a site hosted elsewhere in any way. (Changing where your domain is mapped is something you do at your domain registrar, not on WordPress.com, so even adding a domain mapping here cannot in its own affect your current site.)
As long as you leave the domain pointed at the current host your current site will keep functioning. It will only go offline when you point the domain to us instead.
By the way, hosting on WordPress.com is free and you already have a fully functional site at http://canbyfoursquare.wordpress.com/. The upgrade plans are only to add optional extra features to your site, like connecting a custom domain, but you don’t need any of the plans to have your site hosted on our servers.
