Purchasing own custom domain

  Can I use free plan as before after simply buying only custom domain name? or should I upgrade, If I should then your upgrade plan is so costly.

  I just want to use your free plan with my own custom domain excluding the.wordpress.

  so how it can be done please?

  You can definitely only upgrade your domain registration while on the free plan.
