Putting AIM messenger link in a static Page

I’ve been trying to put in the html code that allows people to click on a link that will open up a window in the aol instant messenger client on their computer with an IM addressed to my screen name.

This is the code I’ve been trying to use:

    a href=”goim?screenname=screennamehere”>text</a

I’ve been trying to put it into my “About” page, which is static. After I put in the html code and click save, I’ve checked the link and I’ve found that the text editor strips “aim:” from the code and when I view the page the aim link that I put in directs me to:

    http://hoppingintopuddles.wordpress.com/contact/goim?screenname=o0mikekim0o

    which is an invalid url.

I’ve put in the email link and it works fine. Anyone know if this is a bug? Does the aim link work in a regular text widget?

Update: Okay, the aim link didn’t work in the text widget either.

Mike, could you give the full code, please? You do this by entering it between backticks.

My guess by your description is that there is javascript in there and that won’t work here on wp.com.

oh sorry. here’s the full code (i just took out the “< >” above:

    <a href="aim:goim?screenname=o0mikekim0o">o0mikekim0o</a>

And when I go to view the page after editing it, the link directs me to the url that I posted above.

I don’t know if wordpress is set up to launch a program on someone’s computer, which is what you would be doing. Actually I would be quite concerned if they did allow that.

Well the thing is, on the same “About” page, I put in the email link, which opens whatever default email app that is running on the visitor’s computer and opens a new blank email addressed to me.

And that link is working fine, at least on my computer. So I guess now I’m wondering what the difference between that and the AIM link is and why one works and not the other.

And AIM is one of the items you can enter on your WP.com Blog Profile Page. So most cvrious indeed.

Well, yes you’re right about that.

If the link works from an email, and you say it does, and when you put it in a page, wordpress strips out the “aim” I would say that it’s going to be a no-go unless one of the code guru’s come through and have an idea. To me, opening an new email window is a little different from launching photoshop or something even nastier like terminal or console.

I’ve always wondered why WP has a spot for that information, as I’ve only ever seen it show up on a blog in text format, as in “IM me at…”

I have my doubts it will work, although I could be corrected…at the moment, though, the facts appear to back me up.
