putting borders around images – cant find the visual editor mentioned on the how to guide

Could it be my theme does not allow borders? I found the link for describing how you can only do this from the actual post or page but when I go there I can’t find any way to bring up the visual editor. When I click on the image it opens the image larger. Also where do I find a good detailed manual on wordpress. Books seem to simple and I am spending a lot of time looking for the how -to’s on various things. would just like a comprehensive book where I can look it up. Electronic or written.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi!

Here’s a link that talks about some advanced editing that you can do with images in WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-settings/#advanced-options

First, in order to find that setting, you’ll need to use the WP Admin Editor. You can access that from loveprintsus.wordpress.com/wp-admin

From there, open the page or post that has the image that you want to edit.

Click on the image, and then you’ll see a pop-up menu that includes a pencil. Click on the pencil.

Click the arrow to open the advanced options section, and then you’ll see the area to edit the image border. Play around with the width (use numbers there) and the colors to find what you like. You can type color names, or CSS Color Hex values into the color box. Here’s a resource that explains a bit about CSS Colors: http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_colors.asp

Regarding WordPress.com documentation – the best source is the WordPress.com documentation, which you can find at https://en.support.wordpress.com

There’s also some free WordPress.com courses at https://dailypost.wordpress.com/blogging-university/

And finally, you may want to check to see if there are any local WordPress Meetups in your area. That’s a great place to meet other WordPress users and learn a lot! Here’s a page with all of the WordPress Meetups around the world: https://www.meetup.com/topics/wordpress/

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for taking the time to lay it out. Will give it a go – still coming up the learning curve. Has been YEARS since I built a website and we did it all by code then… nice to have these fancy tools and capabilities.

Ok maybe I am dense but when I click on the pencil there is no option for borders. All the other options are there but the one I want is borders. It is a jpg I have uploaded. I have title, CSS, size, alignment, etc but no option for borders. Is it my theme or this is standard functionality for WP?

  • Does your Image Editor look like this (after you click on the pencil)?

If the triangle is facing with the point down, click on that to expand the menu.

Also, could you confirm that you are working on the loveprintsus.wordpress.com and using the theme Baskerville? I am looking at a demo site with Baskerville and the option is available.

I am using the Verbosa theme and the options look very similar to the link you sent but in the advance options between CSS and link fields there is no margin or border options. That makes me think it is the theme but seems very strange. Guess i can email them. I have to figure out how to do that.

@ rkpearson When you are in the wp-admin post editor and highlight an image and click the “pencil” icon, you do realise that you need to scroll down on the right to see the borders and margins etc boxes on the left.

  • The Verbosa theme doesn’t seem to be part of WordPress.com. Can you send me a link to the website you are working on?

If your site is not hosted on the WordPress.com platform, then the settings may be different. This forum only supports WordPress.com, but you can check out the WordPress.org (also called self-hosted) forum at https://wordpress.org/support/ and they may be able to help you.

    Hope this helps!

Aha..Thank you. I just assumed if the theme worked on/through WordPress it was the same thing. Just researched the difference between .com and .org and understand the difference. I would still not think it would affect this border issue but apparently it does. I will contact the theme owners directly to understand the difference. Thanks for your patience.
