Putting individual images in a post into an image gallery and keeping good SEO

  Hi there,

  I have some pictures that were added individually to a post (not as a gallery). I now want to put the pictures into a gallery format.

  Somehow, these pictures have made it fairly near the top of Google image searches, so I want to keep or improve upon that favourable position.

  Which way is best in terms of the SEO?

  A: Delete the pictures from the post, reinsert pictures from Media library as gallery

  B: Keep the old post but remove it from the dropdown menu. Then make a new post using the same images in gallery format and add to the dropdown menu. (Website visitors would then have no way to access the old post directly from the website frontpage, but presumably the pics from the old post would still come up in Google image searches?).

  In other words if I use picture A in a post, and the picture rises to a high ranking in Google image search, and I then delete that post and reinsert the same picture from the Media Library into another post, will the picture maintain its Google ranking?

  (I couldn’t see a way of turning the pictures already added to the post into a gallery other than by reading them from the media library using the gallery format.)

  No. Don’t mess with success. Make a new post, re-upload the images to the post to make a new gallery.

  Definitely don’t mess with your images’ existing search mojo.

  I’d pick B as the solution, but it’s not necessary to reupload those images again to make the Gallery. It’s quite possible to create a Gallery from images already uploaded to your site’s Media Library.

  So I take it that you both would go for option B then: keep the original post but remove it from the dropdown menu, then make a new replacement post using the same images in gallery format.
