Putting my blogs into a tab or shortening them
-
Hi guys,
Right now I’m not super happy with the set up of my website/blog page. I hate how all of my blogs are on my main page and wanted to set them up into a tab. Then when I click on the tab they are listed there then people can read. Right now my main page is one huge/long run on of my blogs. I hate how whenever someone wants to read past blogs they have to continue scrolling all the way down until it was posted. Any ideas of how to set this up in a better more efficient way? Like inside a tab listed “Blogs” then a list of them when someone clicks that tab?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot prevent published posts from displaying on your front page, home page, or blog page, as well as on dynamic category pages.
This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
(1) All posts on the front page ie. the Home page and by default that is the URL of the site.(2) A static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page.
By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.
However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. Create your two pages first using whatever titles you wish:
Front page:
Posts page:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/After you do that you go to > Dashboard > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/A static page (select below)
Front page:
Posts page:Go to http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php and make the required change.
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG in the URL above with the actual name of your blog.
Front page displays
Save changes
__ Your latest posts -
You can create a custom menu and include multiple dynamic category pages that automatically display the published posts assigned to the the specific categories in reverse chronological order.
Dynamic category pages https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/ created by the software when we assign categories to posts are also not the same as static pages https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ we create.
You begin by assigning categories to your posts.
This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
(1) All posts on the front page.
(2) Or a static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page.By default the front page of a blog displays all published posts in reverse chronological order with the most recently published post on top. When we publish a post on WordPress software the software automatically creates the same entry in the Archives, and on the dynamic (automatically updating) Categories and Tags pages in accord with the Categories and Tags we assign to that post.
So when we create custom menu and add the dynamic (automatically updating) category pages to that custom menu we create the appearance (not the reality) of posting to more than one page.
You need to be aware that:
1. There are differences between posts and pages described here
https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/2. There are differences between static pages we bloggers create https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ that will not automatically update, and dynamic category pages created by the software when you publish a post which will automatically update https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/.
3. We organize posts by category assignment prior to publication. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/ and when we publish posts the dynamic category pages they automatically display on are determined by the categories we assign to them.
So the process you need to use is:
a. Assign Categories to your Posts. https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories
b. Create a custom menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#1-create-a-custom-menu
c. Add only the dynamic category page links into the custom menu that you want to appear in that menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-category-pages and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus
d. Create pages and sub-pages for static content, not for posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
e. Add any custom links and other items like static pages and sub-pages into your custom menu
https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-custom-links https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-pages
and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menusPlease see https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

The Reading Settings page summary setting changes the RSS feed display only and does not impact the posts on the site.
https://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG withe the actual name of your blog in that URL.
If you want to display only post excerpts on the front page or the blogs page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the text does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.
Please Read Go Back and Edit Posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts and be sure to click Update to publish the after your editing.
Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of only SOME active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

Hi @calliesnider!
Summing up some of the above info:
If you want your blog posts on a secondary page (and something different on your site’s front page) you can set up a Static Front Page, and then a Posts Page. This page will show you how to do both:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/– Create a page named “Home”
– Create a page named “Blog”
– Open My Site > Customize > Static Front Page
– Select A static page
– Choose your new pages as the Front and Posts pages, respectively
– Save & PublishIf needed, you can also use My Site > Customize > Menus to add the new Blog page into your site navigation.
If you’d like your posts to be shorter on your homepage you can change the setting under My Site > Customize > Content options to show Excerpts instead of Full Posts. It looks like you might already have done that part :)
