Putting old posts in new categories – will I lose links?
-
Hi,
I have about 20 posts on my blog and I have no categories yet. If I decide to set up categories and start to categorize old posts, will the URL change? I mean, if I have linked to these posts in the past, will these links no longer work?
Thank youThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes. If your posts have already been indexed by search engines then the URLs for the Categories assigned to them have been indexed. If that’s the case then what you will do when changing Categories is create a string of 404s (broken links – page not found). See here > http://ismyblogworking.com/everythingbyitsrightname.wordpress.com

As you have no Categories assigned to any posts in your case it will not matter if you edit each posts and assign Categories to the posts now. The search spiders will index them after you edit and update the posts. I just wanted to explain everything clearly so you understood.

OK, thank you for your response.
Just to be sure: since I right now have NO categories, it’s ok for me to add new categories and put old posts in them? There won’t be any broken links?
Thanks again. -
No. There will be no broken links. As you are editing existing posts to add Categories to them every category you assign will result in additional new links.

Here’s a useful link for adding Categories http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-categories/ And, you’re welcome.
Happy blogging. :)
