Putting out Follow and RSS buttons in the Twenty Eleven Theme
-
How can I put out the Follow and RSS buttons in the Twenty Eleven Theme? I pulled both widgets to the Main Sidebar and to the Showcase Sidebar as well but they don’t appear on my site.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there – You’ll want to pick one of the layout options with a sidebar in Appearance->Theme Options here:

Hi,
Thank you. I have already pulled both widgets to the Main Sidebar but only the little grey follow button appears in the right bottom corner which is very difficult to find for those who meet a WordPress blog first time. I don’t understand the position 1-12 option and the Showcase Sidebar, Footer Area One, Two, Three expressions too. -
Hi chetlifestyle! I think you may have missed one step that eurello gave you above.
Even if you have added widgets to your sidebar areas in Appearance > Widgets, the sidebars can’t show up until you have chosen a layout that includes a sidebar.
1. Visit Appearance > Theme Options (accessible using this link: https://chetlifestyle.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=theme_options)
2. Under ‘Default layout,’ select ‘Content on left’ or ‘Content on right’ to add your sidebar.
3. Save Changes and check your site.
Let us know if that sorts your problem out.

Hi,
Thank you. I went more times here: http://chetlifestyle.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php, and chose content on the right (or the left) but nothing happened. I may have inactivated once the buttons on the sidebar but I don’t know how to activate them again. -
You need to make sure you save your choice after you’ve viewed the preview, maybe that’s where you missed a step.
The link I gave you above is more reliable, though. Have you tried it? What was the result?

Hi there – With Twenty Eleven, the default page (as opposed to post) template shows no sidebar. However, you can change this. Edit your page like this:
https://chetlifestyle.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=1&action=editYou’ll see a Page Attributes box with a dropdown menu. Pick Sidebar Template from that dropdown and update the page: https://cloudup.com/c6oslaIwgLQ
I went ahead and updated the home page for you; you can do the same for each of the other pages that you want to display your sidebar.

One more question: if somebody follows my blog with an email address, does he/she receive an email about the new comments as well? Or he/she has to comment first? I ask this because posts will be stable but there will be new comments (and comments on new comments).
-
Hi there – RSS is a way for people to read your blog posts in an RSS reader. You can read more about this here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/feeds/Note, though, that feeds only include posts, not pages. And your site doesn’t have any posts yet.
if somebody follows my blog with an email address, does he/she receive an email about the new comments as well? Or he/she has to comment first?
They have to leave a comment and check the box to follow comments in the comment form. Then, they’ll be notified of all new comments on that particular post.
People can subscribe to the RSS feed of all comments on your blog, too.

Thank you again. I rewrote this link: Comments: http://en.blog.wordpress.com/comments/feed/ and inserted the link into the RSS widget. What happens if somebody clicks on the ‘RSS Comments’ button?
-
Hi there – They’ll end up subscribed to all comments left on the general WordPress.com blog. ;)
Your blog’s feeds are as follows:
posts: http://chetlifestyle.wordpress.com/feed
comments: http://chetlifestyle.wordpress.com/comments/feed -
Yes, I used the 2nd one. :-) I tried out clicking on the RSS comments button when I was logged out but nothing happened.
-
Hi there – You’d have to add it to an RSS reader, such as Feedly, or the WordPress.com reader.
-
Sorry for questioning so lot. Can I add it to an RSS reader here: http://chetlifestyle.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php ?
-
Hi there – An RSS reader is an application such as Feedly or Bloglines or the WordPress.com Reader. People who use an RSS reader paste the URL of your feed into their reader to add your blog’s feed. Then, all your posts and/or comments come into their reader stream as they appear on your blog. The point of a Reader is to read all the blogs they follow from one place, instead of going to each individual blog to check for new content.
This is sort of like subscribing by email, but it’s just a different tool for reading blogs.
To try it out, you’d, for example, paste your RSS feed URL into the field at the top of this screen, and press the “+” button to add it:
http://wordpress.com/following/edit/Or, you could go to a free RSS reader, such as http://feedly.com/ and open an account and then test it out there.
Does this clear things up?
