Putting pic with html in sidebar

  • Unknown's avatar

    I want to put The Verse of the Day in my sidebar. It’s not just a link, but the actual picture that changes every day to show a new verse. I see where I can add the link to my blogroll, but that’s not what I want to do.

    I’m a brand new worpress blogger, so sorry if this is something that has been asked a zillion time. lol

    Thanks in advance!

    Sorry…that should have said worDpress. LOL

    I don’t know if it’s been asked a zillion times, but certainly frequently enough to be in the FAQ:

    Put an image in your sidebar

    Happy blogging and welcome to WordPress!

    Thank you so much.

    I did see this, but I don’t want to just put a link to a picture. It will actually be a feed from the website it’s coming from. That each day it will renew automatically with a new verse. Sorry to be a pain.

    Thanks again.

    It sounds as if the code uses either javascript or flash, neither of which is allowed here. Pure html can go into a text widget. RSS widgets are used for feeds.

    Why don’t you post the code here — between backticks — so we can see it? The backtick is the key right next to the 1 on your keyboard and looks like `

    Okay…let’s see if I can do this. lol

    <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="300" height="190" id="votd" align="middle">
    <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.biblegateway.com/usage/votd/votd.swf" />
    <param name="quality" value="high" />
    <param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" />
    <embed src="http://www.biblegateway.com/usage/votd/votd.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="300" height="190" name="votd" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" />
    </object>

    The other is for any place that doesn’t allow the object tags:

    <embed src="http://www.biblegateway.com/usage/votd/votd.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="300" height="190" name="votd" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" />

    Hope that works!

    The problems are:
    allowScriptAccess
    application/x-shockwave-flash

    Those are never going to work here.

    If you can get just the URL of the RSS feed, you can put it in an RSS widget, though. That will work. You cannot use a text widget for this.

    There is an RSS feed… it’s here:

    http://www.biblegateway.com/usage/votd/rss/votd.rdf?31

    Btw…a HUGE thank you again for helping me out. I learn VERY quickly, so I do appreciate all the help.

    Everybody was new at some point, Nancy. :)

    Okay, I just put that feed url into a widget on a text blog. What you will see at the title on the widget is “bible gateway’s verse of the day”- yes, all lower case. Then below is today’s item — 1 Peter 2:24 — but it’s not the text. it’s what I typed and it’s clickable.

    Have you installed a RSS widget yet? The new way isn’t as intuitive as before.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh, that’s odd. I clicked it and it left me on the front page of my blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Ok, got it sorted. If you click on the widget title, it takes you their site. Even checking “display contents” didn’t do the trick. I don’t know if it’s my browser or what, but if you have this problem, you could title the widget something like: Click here to read the verse below.

    If you leave the space for the title blank, it will default to the title I mentioned above.

    I’m all new to widgets, but I was on the link page and was reading up on those. Where do I find the widgets to make for this one?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Okay…so I played around and got the link that you can click to get to the verse of the day. I don’t think I’m going to get any better than that, am I?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello Margaret…me again. lol

    Okay…I did this and also added a search engine on my sidebar. But everything else went away. Including my blogroll that I wanted to keep.

    Read the threads on widgets from the last few days. Widget changes are now a big deal. Click on the Support button at the bottom of the main forum page and you can scroll back to last Friday. There are a ton of threads on these kinds of issues, with workarounds posted.

    But if this was the first time you’ve made a change to your sidebar this is normal behavior. You will have to select the widgets you want and put them in the sidebar, because the first change you make wipes out the default sidebar arrangement.

  • Unknown's avatar

    okey dokey! Sounds great! I’ll have to go look at the faq to see how to get the blogroll back. It’s the one thing I did want there. lol

    Thanks!! You all have been great!

  • Unknown's avatar

    The Blogroll is the LINKS widget. It’s a dumb name, but that’s what they call it.

    You’re welcome.
