How is it that we have bloggers who wrte their hearts out, some every night. They get their fair share of visits/hits but you get a blog like this http://tar2006.wordpress.com/2007/11/05/bird-saw-it-too/ which makes it to the Top 100 blogs of the day. Please it is nothing personal but the blogger is pasting Youtubes ONLY!!!
I just think bloggers who write stuff should be rewarded dude.

Suffice to say that blogging is all about competition for hits, links and ranking. Many blogs that contain absolutely no unique material at all have gazillions of visitors/readers. If you want staff to clarify this for you Support hours are weekdays 9-5 PM Pacific time and you can reach staff in 2 ways.
(1) The “support” button on the top right hand corner of any dashboard/admin side blog page.
(2) The “Support” links at the top and bottom of this forum page http://wordpress.com/contact-support/ -

Fame is not a reward for virtue or talent; it is a reward for discovering and delivering what vast numbers of people want to see. If you believe that talent is its own reward, you won’t get so hung up on the Cheezburgers of the world.
-
Also: is it your experience that the top television shows, newspapers and magazines cover short stories, creative non-fiction and heartfelt outpourings? They don’t. The fame machine is completely separate from the talent machine, which is why there are awards other than the Golden Globes and People’s Choice. There have been several attempts to start WordPress awards, but they’ve all died on the vine because, by definition, there is a smaller audience for them.

Thanks for you prompt feedback. I have sent a note to support.
I agree that talent and smut must be separated but I feel that WordPress has a responsibility as a good corporate citizen maybe??? to create a criteria which will allow quality blogs to shine. Why the hell should a blogger insert YouTubes links in a blog and make the TOP 100 Posts? Sorry folks but something is wrong with the existing criteria :-)
-
The existing criteria for Top Blogs is fame. Worth is an entirely different set of criteria: what kind of alternative did you have in mind, and how much time would it take to administer it? There are 1.75 million blogs on WordPress.com.
-
raincoaster, well I am no expert but but a basic requirement would be a minimum of say 500 words (all original) of post. Should have a minimum of 20-50 comments. I know that it would call for some administrating so maybe WordPress can see a revenue opportunity where quality blogs would have to register for a fee :-)

I wouldn’t do it, and I consider myself to be a quality blogger (although there are only about six words in my last post…I did a three thousand worder last week). The suggestion automatically limits it to “quality blogs who have money to kick around,” when blogging’s supposed to be free. So The Homeless Guy, despite being an outstanding blogger, wouldn’t be eligible.
I can’t see WordPress.com wanting to get into the critical content analysis gig. There isn’t any money in it and it costs a lot to have someone actually read all those things. Besides, it’ll piss off everyone who doesn’t win and all of their friends. At least with Top Blogs being mostly numbers, you can sneer at those who pander to crowds.
These are why it is repeatedly suggested that content quality awards be established. But everyone who’s done it finds it too much work for nothing; by definition, the blogs aren’t popular, and winning an award doesn’t do much for their popularity, either.
