Puzzled by my statistics
-
I really appreciate the statistics page. It has helped me learn a lot about blogging.
Recently I have had an increase in traffic and I have noticed a large discrepancy between the total hits given in the graph and the number of hits implied by the number of referrers and search engine referrals.
I understand, please correct me if I am wrong, that the number of page hits could be quite different from the other two because not everyone explores, or even stays around, and some people explore a lot.
What I don’t understand is why my total of hits is so much higher than the number of people coming in via referrers and search engines.
In short, where are they coming from? Or how can I find out? Or have I misunderstood the stats?

We basically aren’t given that information. It could be that your blog is being emailed around; it could be any number of things. The total of hits will always be greater than the number via referrers and search engines, because quite a lot of your readers will have you in their browsing history and will simply use that URL to come back; this leaves no referrer trace.

is the number of page views identical with the number of people who have come to my blog? I used to be with blog.de and there it showed the number of users and the number of page views.
but wordpress offers only one number. so is this the number of users or the number of page views? and how can I get more detailed statistics?thanks a lot in advance

No, the number of pageviews is not equal to the number of people who’ve come to your blog. It’s the number of times “Angela” has been loaded; she’s a tiny smiley face that’s always somewhere on your theme, and WP.com counts the number of times browsers have displayed her.
WP.com itself is running google analytics on our blogs, so they have very detailed information. We don’t. You can add sitemeter or statcounter (not the javascript versions, though) and get different information, but basically our information doesn’t go that deep.
