Puzzled Newbie

Hi, I haven’t even started using WordPress yet. I only signed up to try to find a reliable blog software and get away from another blogging site that is so bug ridden I despair.
I find I’m receiving a stream of WordPress emails urging me to use this and that, but I’m confused. I don’t especially mind getting these emails, but why are you so keen to thrust this stuff on me? Is WordPress a paid product? I assumed it was advertiser supported.
Even then, I don’t mind. I pay for everything I use, and I even went so far as to pay the small developer’s donation request twice for BatteryCare. I think he was surprised because he emailed me back with profuse thanks.
So is WordPress a try before you buy product? I just haven’t had a chance to use it yet. It looks good, and looks a lot better than Blogg… I think I will stay here. Peter

Upgrades are paid. If I were you, I’d unsubscribe from those emails (the link should be at the bottom).
You can just use your blog for free. To learn how to use it, go through http://learn.wordpress.com

OK, thanks. As I said, I will willingly pay for software I use, so that’s not a problem, and the emails don’t bother me – yet.
As a matter of fact, at this very moment I’m writing to a London newspaper (The Guardian) saying “I read you every day and if you want readers to subscribe, I will willingly do so. It’s no different to buying a newspaper on the street – I don’t expect to get it free.” Same here. If I get value and quality, I’ll pay.

Ha ha, yes, but as I said, we used to buy a newspaper without worrying about it. I make DVD slide shows of high quality and high production values. I won’t just give them away. I’ll always pay for quality.
It’s a pity about The Times, though. I’m sure that’s a great newspaper and I wish I could read it, but the castle proprietor is so ugly and dangerous that I dare not approach and pay his price to enter.
