Before you do anything at all you must read all of the differences between WordPress.com free hosted blogs and WordPress.org installs so you are clear on the restrictions here at WordPress.com.

WordPress.com does not accept incoming domain transfers.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#transferring-a-domain-to-wordpress-comIf you accept the restrictions I linked to above and would like to use your domain to map to from your free hosted wordpress.com blog to it you will first need to set up domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/ set up domain mapping. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
After you make the domain mapping purchase here > Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades and do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Do I have to pay to do this?
Yes. Domain mapping is a paid upgrade that costs $13.00 per domain, per year.

If you are planning to close down your existing paid hosting site as well as moving over to wp.com, then remember to export your site beforehand. If you are using wp.org software that should be fairly easy to do. Then you can also import your posts to wp.com.
