Quality of resized images – imagemagick?
-
The images on blog don’t look very good when they are resized by WordPress. From research on the web I understand that this is due to the use of the GD image library and that ImageMagick would give much better results.
So
Is there anyway I can get WordPress.com to use ImageMagick or any other way to get it to resize images with higher quality?Or should I consider moving to a self hosted blog where I can change the plugins?
(I realize I could resize the images in photoshop and then insert at full size, but this isn’t really what I want to do)

Being a photographer, I know that image appearance is both very important AND very subjective. So while I myself haven’t seen any significant degradation in my images by WordPress.com, you may very well feel differently and I wouldn’t argue with you about it.
I’d love to see a specific example though, even if just to rule out any weirdness or glitches.
But the short answer is that if you would like to use a different resize engine, you will have to move to a self-hosted WordPress site. Or, as you mention, move resizing to your pre-upload workflow. There are other options aside from manually doing it in Photoshop. And even in Photoshop, using “actions” to automate things like resizing can speed up cumbersome tasks considerably.
