Query on domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

sorry I am posting this here but I have this query and I am hoping somebody will sort it out here !

I am planning on starting a new wordpress blog soon. This is going to be an explainer for current affair issues such as the North Korean deal etc.

Now, the thing is I will be buying the server space and making it into a proper site sometime in January or February. but some of the names I am looking at including (issues360) has already been taken ! ( and its not being used) ..

my question is can I still go ahead with issues360.wordpress.com and when the time comes buy the server space and change it issues360.com?

Hope I am being crystal clear here :)

If issue360.com is already taken (either at wp or on the web) then you’ll have very little chance of getting hold of the name.

If you’re buying server space, presumably you mean hosting, then there’s no point in starting the blog here. I would download the software from http://www.wordpress.org and just upload it to your new hosting. Still the problem of a domain name though. If it’s gone, you’re just gonna have to find another name I’m afraid.

If it’s not primarily a business blog, why not use issues360.org instead?

guys thanks so much for your replies. I think I need to look up different names or as raincoaster says maybe look at issues360.org.

The thing is this: Initially I am going working on a 2-3 month timeframe to see if the site (ie blog) generates the sort of attention (not just in terms of hits but also in terms of response from my target readers) I want. This is mostly for b-school applicants in the short run and in the long run well maybe a small (but better) alternative to websites like answers.com.

Depending on the response, I am hoping to host it in order to enable me to add more contributors to the website etc etc. So its extremely important for me to know if the domain name has been taken! but yes I will look at alternate ones now.

    Thanks!

I don’t know that 2-3 months will be long enough (depending on what promotion you’re gonna do) to give a fair assessment.

I would (I think) go with your initial suggestion and get a blog here and see how it goes. Hey, it’s free! You could then either go for the full hosted option or just buy the domain and point it at your wp.com account. There’s more information on this if you do a search for “domains” in the forum.

    1) I can use .org extension right? It shouldn’t be a problem I hope. I am going to go ahead and register issues360.wordpress.com! issues360.com is out of the question because i have to cough up like 80 dollars for the domain.

    2) if I plan to use advertising in the future, the fact that i have a .org extension shoudlnt be a problem ?

    3) Is the process of buying the domain space and the transfer from wordpress the same?

i know that i should be posting these at wordpress.org but I dont want to start a brand new topic

    thanks!

    1. the dot org extension shouldn’t be a problem.

    2. I don’t think you will stand a chance of getting advertising even though you’ll have the .org. the blog is still hosted at .com and I would think it will need to stick by the .com rules. the .org URL will only point to the .com and isn’t a full hosted domain in its own right.

    3. You don’t buy “domain space”. That’s free with your issues360.wordpress.com blog. You will only purchase the domain name. I don’t understand what you mean by “transfer from” if you’re hosting at wp.com and pointing the URL to it.

    Collin,

Thank you for being so patient and for helping me out. This forum is one of the biggest reasons I want to stick with wordpress.

The thing is this, I am starting this blog tomorrow (issues360.wordpress.com) and after a period of one or two months I want to host it myself and make it say issues360.org. (I dont think I am using the right technical terms but I hope I am getting the message across)

    Nope, that makes sense. Thanks.

There is an export/import process from wp.com to wp.org but I have never used it. You’ll be better off asking (search first!) over at the .org forums. This has been covered a few times.

Don’t forget that the download (hosted) version of wp is slightly different and it will take time to get it operating the same as you will very quickly get used to the .com version. It’s not hugely different, but stats and themes are where most people come unstuck.

Go for it. Get the blog going on this site (.com) and worry about the hosting in the new year. :)

Patient? No problem! It’s what we’re here for.

    :o)
