Question

    Hello!
I have a book blog and I was wondering if it would be possible to create something similar to this (https://the-bibliofile.com/browse/) on my blog. I realize the website linked probably wasn’t created on wordpress, but I wanted to know if there is a similar feature (something where lots of book covers are pasted, when you hover on a cover it tells you what day the post was published on, comment count and if the book is recommended). It won’t be exactly the same, but I wanted to know if it was possible…or do I need a plugin? I’m using the free wordpress.
    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi, to make it exactly like that you would likely need a plugin. But with the free version, you could set up a gallery of images and hover to display a caption you write, or you might like linking to posts about the review instead.

Would either of those options work for you?

Yes, they would. Thanks! Can you show me how to do that?

    HI,

But with the free version, you could set up a gallery of images and hover to display a caption you write, or you might like linking to posts about the review instead.

    Option 1 ]
you could set up a gallery of images and hover to display a caption you write – I didnt see additional CSS getting saved. So could not do this.

    Option 2]
you might like linking to posts about the review instead.
I have created a gallery of images, created a link on click using blocks.
Gallery Images – Link on click
Maybe something near to what you want.

    Happy to help!

    Regards
    Shwetha

  • Oh it’s doable without CSS. You just need to use an older gallery. If you want a page with a gallery that has captions on hover:

    – Start here: https://wordpress.com/page

    – Give the page a title

    – On the next line, type /classic to get a classic block

    – Click the Media icon (it looks like a camera and music)

    – Choose Create Gallery

    – Select some pictures. Add captions.

    – For the gallery type, choose one of the “tiled” options.

    – You’ll see your gallery looking like images with normal captions, but when you publish the page and view it on the front end of the site, you’ll see a hover effect.

In my opinion, though, hover-effects aren’t as nice now that so many people use phones to view websites.

Creating a gallery of posts, and using the post excerpt to share the brief review, may be a better bet.

Hi, so I put in a gallery page. How can I add more photos? When I click duplicate it gives me a huge picture and I just want a bunch of small ones

  • Just to clarify, are you using the instructions here to set up your gallery:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/

No, I am using the page that is preformatted as a gallery. I figured out how to make it the size I want, but the images aren’t linking. I add the link, but when I preview the page, all the links go away and I’m just clicking on an image. I’m not sure what’s going on.

  • Got it. There are lots of ways to make galleries.

I add the link, but when I preview the page, all the links go away and I’m just clicking on an image.

Can you send a link to the post or page you’re working on? We’ll take a look.

Hi, thanks so much! I managed to fix it – I had to save after adding each link, which was kind of annoying 😅

  • I had to save after adding each link, which was kind of annoying 😅

That would be annoying! Thank you for letting us know. If we can duplicate the issue, we’ll file a request to have it fixed. Cheers!

  • I just tested and noticed:

    – I can’t just paste a link over an image to link it. That used to be a thing, but perhaps they had to change that when they made galleries individually linkable. I’ll watch for more info on that.

    – If I click an image, click the link icon, paste a link, then click the next image, the link isn’t saved. I have to press the apply button, or press enter, before moving on to the next image.

If you were doing that and it didn’t work for you, and you want to share more details, we can troubleshoot further.

Or, since your gallery is set up now, we can just keep an eye out for others having issues with saving gallery links.

Either way, though, thank you for pointing that out!

Funny, I pressed the apply button…oh well :) if you want more details, I would be open to doing that!
    Thanks so much
