Question about Domain Mapping
-
Hi All,
I think domain mapping is what I need, but I’m pretty ignorant about how websites work so I thought I’d describe my problem here and hopefully get pointed in the right direction.
I’ve been building a blog/website through wordpress.org, which currently has the address http://www.gregtassone.net/blog. I bought the domain space and URL from Host Gator earlier this year (www.gregtassone.net).
I want the primary address for my website/blog to be http://www.gregtassone.com, which I also own, although it’s owned through GoDaddy. But, I like the WordPress back-end I’ve been using so far and would like to continue using it, so I don’t want to transfer my entire website over to a new server.
I think what I need to do is first upgrade my wordpress account from the free ‘.org’ account to a paid ‘.com’ account so I can even access the ‘Domains Page’ that various help articles on this topic have referenced. I don’t see those currently so I assume when I upgrade they will show up…?
I guess my real question is, at the end of this process, will the main URL associated with this site change from http://www.gregtassone.net/blog to http://www.gregtassone.com without anything else changing, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thank you for your help!

Hello,
I don’t think we can help you on this forum because it’s just for WordPress.com hosted blogs. You asked about upgrading from .org to .com, but that wouldn’t get you to your goal so I’d skip that. For assistance, I suggest you post your question over at the WordPress.org support forum: https://wordpress.org/support/
If you don’t have a username there, you’ll need to register before posting.

Domain mapping will do you no good
The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.
This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/
The forum at WordPress.ORG is not connected to WordPress.COM so you will need to open an account at .ORG if you do not already have one. You may use the same email at WordPress.ORG as you do at WordPress.COM.
For more on the difference: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you are asking for help with a WordPress.COM site then we need a link to that site to give you accurate help.

Ok thanks for your help, I will check out the .org support forums instead. I just thought since maybe I’d end up on .com either way I’d post here first. It sounds like domain mapping is indeed the wrong tree, so I shall search elsewhere.
Thanks again!

You be welcome
make sure you find the correct instructions at .ORG for “moving” your blog – do it wrong and you will crash your site

In the spirit of helpfulness, and since my issue does bleed across the distinct .COM and .ORG separation between wordpress warriors, I’ve found exactly how to solve my problem and thought I’d share it here.
I built my website via wordpress.org and a domain I purchased from a third party.
I now want to change the URL visitors use to visit my homepage, but obviously I don’t want to lose any of the work I’ve done so far.
First I need to move from a self hosted wordpress to wordpress.com.
Now that I’m on wordpress.com instead of wordpress.org, I have access to the Domains page. This is where I can follow the steps for Domain Mapping and hook up the URL I bought from GoDaddy with the blog posts and web pages I built through wordpress.org (which is now wordpress.com).
If you don’t already own the domain you want to use, wordpress.com allows you to purchase it (if it’s available) through the Domains page as well.
I should have just started on wordpress.com in the first place, and could have avoided this whole mess. But fortunately switching from wordpress.org to wordpress.com, and acquiring a new URL in the process isn’t actually impossible!

You can move from http://www.gregtassone.net/blog. to http://www.gregtassone.net/ on your current host with a WordPress.ORG install – fairly simple to do – but must be done properly
Or you can move the content to WordPress.COM and use domain mapping to make gregtassone.net/ the address of your blog here
So a bit of apples and oranges
