Question about free tier ads

Curious if the only ad that gets put on a free tier website is the small banner at the top that says “Create your website at WordPress.com” and has a “Get Started” button next to it. And the branding at the bottom as well. That’s all that I am seeing but I just started today and didn’t know if they add more ads in down the road. Thanks in advance!

Eventually there’ll be ads below your posts when you have created some. And possibly an ad in a sidebar, if you have one.

That banner at the top only appears for logged-out visitors to your site, as it’s in the place where logged-in visitors would see the WordPress.com admin bar instead.
As @themagicrobot mentions above, we also show ads on the site itself on free, public WordPress.com sites. We display ads at the bottom of each post and page, and occasionally also in the sidebar, a collapsible sticky ad at the top of the site, and inbetween paragraphs in the post content itself. Which ads appear depends on the site visitor, and factors like their location, browser history, and whether or not they opted into advertising cookies for your site, so no two people ever see exactly the same ads on your site.
You can remove ads from your site by upgrading to one of our paid plans, but if you have a custom domain you can also apply for our WordAds program where you share in the income derived from ads on your site.

Hi, I’m not the original poster, but I’m hoping you can answer a question on the same topic. I can’t see ads on my site, but friends tell me that when they look, ads are ‘scattered through the blog’, as the WordPress description has it.
Now I’ve found out about this, I’d like to get rid of these ads. Everywhere I look to find out how, it says I can ‘can remove ads from the site by upgrading to one of the paid plans’. However, the instructions on subscribing to a paid plan they link to seem to describe buying and starting up a NEW – albeit ad-free, presumably – blog, NOT removing ads from an existing blog.
Can you confirm that this is in fact what they mean you have to do?
