Question about leaving a comment and receiveing a login screen…

I have a friend with a wordpress.com site. Why are folks asked to sign in when trying to leave a comment on her site? A box pops up that says “You’re trying to publish a comment as (email visible only to moderators and staff)…You need to log in to that account before you can proceed. and the other side of the box says “You are being asked to login because (email visible only to moderators and staff) is used by an account you are not logged into now. ” Seems like she might be not getting comments because of this.
The weird thing is is that sometimes I will be able to comment and sometimes not. I comment on other wp.com sites with no problem. I though at first that it might be a gravatar thing but it also doesn’t let a regular (non-gravatar) email address go though either.
Can someone please explain what the settings should be so that this does not happen.

How many username accounts do you have?
Do you log out of each one and clear your browser cache and cookies before logging in under another username account?

Actually, I am trying to figure out why you need to sign in at all to make a comment on someone else’s site. What if you don’t even have a wordpress.com site? Does that mean you can’t comment on that site??

We bloggers can choose whether or not we require a login and email address to leave a comment or not. But if we don’t and choose to allow anonymous commenting then we have flung doors to your blog wide open to spammers.

_Users must be registered and logged in to commentNote that the prompt to submit and email address and a website URL will still appear, but providing an email address and logging in are not required, and you cannot change this so the prompt does not appear.
P.S. If you do change comment settings to allow for anonymous commenting on your own blog do be sure to set up full comment moderation ie. “An administrator must always approve the comment” because anonymous commenting is bound to increase the amount of spam your blog will receive.

Thanks for your time. I’m not sure why some of us get that log in screen. At least we know that she can get some of her comments.

I was logged into WordPress.com and had to trouble leaving the comment. I’m not clear on why you did have a problem so I tagged this thread for a Staff followup. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond.

If you are attempting to comment with an email address already connected to a WordPress.com or Gravatar account, you will be required to log in first.
This is to prevent impersonation.

WordPress.com recognizes your blogger identity but Blogger does not. In reference to Blogger ie. commenting on blogspot blogs the issue is on the other end. Blogspot software assumes we all have a single username here at wordpress.com and only a single blog by the exact same matching name. It will not accept any other URL – invalid URL! it says. Ha!So if we have a domain, or we have more than one blog registered under the same WordPress.com username, trying to comment and have it link to our wordpress.com blogs becomes impossible, unless the blogspot blogger chooses to enable commenters to post with a username and URL on their Blogger blog.
The only workaround is to register a Blogger blog which will allow you to comment but your username will not be linked to your WordPress.com blog when you do. Then you are labeled as a ‘no reply blogger’. It’s crazy-making!
Open ID has always failed more often than it has worked.
Bottom line: This is a well known issue. If you simply use the Name/URL option when it’s provided then your blog will be linked to your username on the comments you leave on blogspot blogs.

OK – maybe I’m missing something, but I am also having difficulties making comments on a Blogspot site. I have only one WP identity, so I went to the WordPress site and got logged in, but when I went back to the blog I wanted to comment on, and used my WP info it wiped out my comment and told me ‘you do not own that identity’. I tried three times with the same results – despite being logged in at the main site. This has happened so often I’ve taken to using my Google ID instead, just to avoid having to save a copy of my comment each time in case WP decides not to cooperate. I am working from a desktop, not a SmartPhone, so no apps are involved. Can you advise me as to why this persistently happens – and not just with Blogspot? Very frustrating!
