Question about moving to wp.org
-
Hi. I recently got the domain mapping upgrade and I’m still recovering google-wise. If I decide to self-host, being able to keep my domain, would I go through another google hit or would I be fine since the domain name would be the same?
Thanks in advance.

You might experience a temporary blip, but you should be okay overall, relative to your WP.com NEW domain. By that I mean you’ll take a hit because all the links to your blog with the whatever.wordpress.com URL will vanish from your listing and you’ll have to live without them. So yes, you’ll take a hit that way in Google. It won’t cost you anything in Technorati because Technorati is stupid and counts only for specific URLs, so your new domain on Technorati starts out of nowhere and builds from there and you can move server to server with no loss as long as the URL remains the same.

Actually I’m trying to figure out this statement. Since the previous wp.com subdomain forwards to the new purchased domain, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Hi all..thanks for the input. I was thinking (or hoping) it shouldn’t be an issue either because I’m still experiencing the blip from going from xx/wordpress.com to my current xx,com by purchasing the upgrade. So my understanding is that if I self-host my domain name would stay the same and it wouldn’t matter to google where my host is.
My PR disappeared (from 4 to 0) when I made the change but I have noticed that almost from the moment I deleted my wp.com url from my google account, my hits began to increase. Would my PR be affected again? I think that’s my greatest concern which, of course, I neglected to say. (it was a long day, mea culpa)
Still rebuilding at Technorati but thx for the info that another change won’t matter there. I’m kind of ambivalent about Technorati anyway.

Your experience is exactly like mine. You drop in pagerank because it’s a new URL, but it doesn’t take long to rebuild, actually, and it will only drop if Google changes something on their end, which they do from time to time for no reason I’ve discovered. The Technorati hit can be worked around by registering the new URL and pretending to Tech. and yourself that you’ve got two different blogs. You’ll rebuild more quickly there because T counts every post on your old .wordpress URL as a link to your new post on your own URL. See how messed up it is? But in this case it works to your advantage. That WILL stop when you go off WP.com, though.

Many thanks, raincoaster. Technorati doesn’t seem to be counting those links, but it’s probably because I emailed them before the switch asking what to do. I guess they did it! Why they can’t just move links and favorites over is beyond me. Oh, well….
