Question about removing duplicate photos from media storage

Is there currently a way of sorting photos in media files which may be duplicates? I’m fairly sure I have several duplicates and would like to delete those in order to have better media storage space usage.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no automatic image recognition for duplicate photos, but if you uploaded the same photo with the same title more than once wp will have added a number after the title (usually “1”) so that might give you a clue about duplicates.

Thank you so much for responding. Umm, is there a way to sort them by date? Or by title? My media library doesn’t have sequence numbers added to the duplicates.

I’m trying to find a way to sort so that like photos come up together and not have to weed through 5 thousand photos to find duplicates.

You wouldn’t have added the number at the end of the image: if it is a duplicate with the same title, then wordpress would automatically add the number.

You could sort by date, but that would be the date of upload, not the date that the image was taken.

You can’t sort by title, but if you suspect that you have more than one image with the same title you could type that into the search field.

The thing is, though, that if a duplicate image is in a post, deleting it from the library will also delete it from the post as well.

Are you running out of storage space?

Yes, storage space is the issue. But, I also see I have 4,980 in “All” then 4,165 in “images” and 6 in “unattached” . I see these totals at the top of the media library page. Then as I look thorough my photos I can see duplicate titles and thumbnails without the extra number. I also see duplicate titles without a thumbnail image. Also without the extra number. Apparently WP did not put the extra number on my photos. Possibly because I imported the photos along with my posts from blogger? I’m looking for a faster way to find the duplicates without messing up my blog more than it is already.

Hmm. I don’t know about how importing affects the titles of images.
Maybe another volunteer will have some insight into this.

Just be careful if you delete files from your library. If a photo was attached to a post and you delete it from the library it will be unavailable in the post.

Note: I have 4,348 images attached to posts, Unattached (138) (and those are uncompressed images I stupidly uploaded because I thought I could download them: wp.com is not an image storage site; you cannot download images from the library) and I’ve used only 11% of my storage space.

Your images don’t seem to be unduly huge. How much storage space do you have left?

if I were you, I’d just register another blog and hotlink from that.

It says I’ve used 99% of my photo storage.

When I first imported my posts from blogger I imported the posts two times from one blog and three times from my two other blogs. I’m a computer dummie. I didn’t know what I was doing. I read instructions saying the posts would not be duplicated and found out later that wasn’t true.

I managed to delete the duplicate posts one by one but that left duplicate photos. I thought when I deleted the extra posts it would delete the extra photos too but that didn’t happen.

My blog is primarily a teaching one but also a way for my quilt customers to see their finished quilts. The photos are very important.

Thank you raincoaster. I have started dividing my blog into separate interests by creating other blogs. I’m putting links into pages on the main blog. Is that the best way? But this still leaves me with the problem of very little photo storage space for the main blog.

I see so many pretty (and very functional) blogs. I get blog envy. I want a pretty and functional blog too. I’ve come to a point where I either get my blog at least working correctly or give up all together.

You upload the photos to a secondary blog, then get their URL there, and instead of inserting from your computer into your main blog, you use “Insert from URL”. That way you use zero storage space on your main blog.

OOoo! Good idea. Thank you! Would you mind explaining the way this is done in a little more detail? Would I create a blog simply to store photos? No posts? I see the logic. I just want to be sure I understand the process before I mess something else up on my blogs.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, create a blog basically just to store the photos. You don’t need to put the images in posts, just add them to the media library there.

Don’t set it to Private or all the images vanish!

    This should help http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/image-links/

Thank you both very much! That will work. I appreciate your help.
