Question about Switching Plans

Hello, I’m currently on the free plan. I’m thinking of upgrading to the $5 a month one. If I do this and then the following year I choose not to renew the $5 a month plan, will I automatically go back to the free plan or will my blog shut down? I wouldn’t want to lose all of my content or have to start at zero. I would hope that everything would just go back to the way it was, including my address that includes the .wordpress.com. Thanks!

Yes, you are correct. Bear in mind that if you’d set up a custom domain name along with your paid plan then you’d lose that if you didn’t continue to renew but you could continue with your site ending in WordPress.com. This leads me to another question then. So, if I chose one of the templates that’s available for people who pay, but then chose not to pay after a year, I know that I would lose the custom domain as well as the template, but would my content still be there? And more importantly would it just revert to the way that it was before or would it be a mess and I would have to pick a free template again and then sort blog posts, upload them, etc? I just want to know exactly what would happen if I decided to not renew. Is it hard to have the blog that I had before? Because I don’t know if I can/want to pay for years so I want to make sure that my current blog would be intact. Thanks!

Your content remains on your site whatever theme you change to although the Hemingway Rewritten theme you are currently using looks fine to me. There can be some re-arranging of menus, widgets, featured image, post formats etc required depending on the new theme chosen. I find WordPress.com’s use of the word “Premium” can be confusing. If you upgrade to the Premium plan you have access to all WordPress.com themes free and premium. https://wordpress.com/pricing/
If you found a premium theme that you really liked but decided not to renew your Premium plan then you could purchase that premium theme for a one-off payment and then use it with the Personal plan or the free plan. https://en.support.wordpress.com/premium-themes/
